RAIN ENDING FRIDAY MORNING: Quite a soaking rain for a big chunk of Alabama
since late last night. As of midday, these rainfall totals:
1.80 inches at Birmingham Airport
1.85 at Shelby County Airport
1.46 in Greystone Cove (North Shelby County)
1.83 in Trussville
0.70 at Tuscaloosa Airport
This afternoon the main band of rain had shifted eastward, but the
precipitation is not over. A low pressure system moving east from Arkansas
will be pulling a cold front closer to Alabama. Therefore, we will be seeing
some more showers through tonight and possibly some thunderstorms. The
atmosphere is rather stable, so we do not anticipate severe weather.
As the cooler air starts moving in Friday morning, some lingering, mostly
light, rain will persist for a few hours. After that look for a dry weekend.
We could still have some cloud cover Saturday morning, but the sun should
break through later. Both Sunday and Monday should be mostly sunshine. See
our day-by-day forecast and you will note that we do not expect any frost or
freezing temperatures.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: In Auburn for the Georgia-Auburn game Saturday at 2:30
p.m., it should be partly sunny with about 62 degrees at kick off and in the
50s in the fourth quarter. Houston will be in Birmingham to play UAB at 3:00
p.m. Partly sunny, dry weather is expected with 60 at kick off and 52 by the
final whistle. Down in Baton Rouge, Alabama will play LSU in a night game.
It should be fair and dry with temperatures in the 50s. For tonight's high
school playoff games, there will be a risk of showers and temperatures in
the upper 50s.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A hurricane hunter flight was originally scheduled today
for a disturbance about 300 miles WSW of Guadeloupe, which was causing lots
of cloudiness and thunderstorms over the Eastern Caribbean. It remains
poorly organized and winds upstairs are not favorable. There are a couple of
other disturbed weather areas, but no threat of development at this time.
FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: Old timers in the Plains, especially in Nebraska,
Kansas, Oklahoma and West Texas have always referred to a strong cold front
as a "blue norther." On November 11, 1911, one of those caused a huge
temperature contrast. Kansas City warmed to 76 by late morning. The
temperature fell so fast that it started snowing by early afternoon and by
midnight it was 11 above zero. Oklahoma City had a record high of 83 and a
record low of 17-all on that same day!
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: No walking little Miss Molly today with a
steady rain-heavy at times. Her excursions outdoors were limited to a quick
dash to do her business and then back indoors for some naps and playtime.
Since she can't get outside for her "vacation," she has been insisting on
more attention to play kick ball, pull rope and you name it. She now has
about 15 toys scattered all over the floor and we have to watch where we
step. I went for coffee and stepped on at least three toys. But life goes on
even with the obstacles.
