COOL AIR SWEEPING IN: Cooler and much drier air was sweeping across Alabama
rapidly today, but we can expect even colder weather toward the end of the
week. Sandwiched in between will be some showers later Thursday and Thursday
night.

The dew point had dropped into the mid and low 20s across extreme North
Alabama this afternoon. This is going to lead to a night where there will be
a wide variation in low temperatures. We think the low across Central
Alabama will average about 38 because the wind will not completely die down.

However, in some of the nooks and crannies protected from the wind, there
could easily be some 32-34-degree lows.

Another sunny day Tuesday with highs only in the mid 60s. Wednesday will
also be dry, but showers will arrive by Thursday afternoon and increasing at
night. We are very impressed by a very strong high pressure system for so
early in the season that will be pushing down this way Friday and Saturday
with a central pressure near 1040 millibars. This may bring us a temperature
near freezing Saturday and Sunday morning.

EARLY LOOK-GEORGIA AT AUBURN: One of the most anticipated games of the year
will be in Auburn Saturday as Georgia comes to town. Early indications are
for great football weather with all sunshine but with temperatures at kick
off only in the upper 50s. We will have a more complete football forecast
later in the week.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: Spaceweather.com reported a coronal mass ejection (CME) is
due to hit the earth's magnetic field and this could lead to another
sighting of northern lights tonight. An extreme geomagnetic storm began
around 4:00 p.m. CDT Sunday, although it has subsided today. Last night the
aurora was sighted as far south as Oklahoma and extreme North Alabama.
Daniel Lamb, one of the monitors of the ABC 33/40 Weather Forum, lives 12
miles NE of Huntsville. He reported that the northern lights were much
brighter than the last time. The sky looked like it was bleeding and the
horizon was a very light green. Naturally, if they do reoccur tonight you
will need to look in a northerly direction. Your chances diminish greatly if
you're close to city lights.

Bryan Glenn, who is from Birmingham, happened to be in Olney, Illinois last
night. He said the northern lights began right after sunset and it was the
most beautiful glow of red with lighter red vertical streaks. Directly
underneath was a horizontal section of blue. The sky was very clear and he
reported quite a show.

MONDAY RAMBLES: Extremely impressive precipitation amounts in the
intermountain west in the last few weeks. Today, in Zion National Park in
Southern Utah, all tributaries were running at very dangerous levels,
including the Virgin River...coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 11 at
Stanley, Idaho...cold air continues to build up in Alaska where it was 35
below this morning at Arctic Village and 30 below at Dry Creek.
