PESKY CLOUDS: We often find that after a cold front moves through Alabama,
that clearing can take place quickly or it can seemingly hang around
forever. It is very difficult to forecast in some cases. Today the clouds
have hung tough, but drier air continues to circulate into the state and the
clouds should gradually break away.

Probably our best weather news is that we see little or no chance of rain
for the next four or five days and no extreme temperatures. Even though
colder air has been spreading into the state, we see little or no risk of
frost because we don't think the wind will diminish to calm, which is
necessary for frost. If you will check our day-by-day forecast, you will
note that we will have highs in the 60s until at least midweek including
upper 60s on Tuesday or Wednesday. Our chilliest morning should come Monday
when we expect lows in the upper 30s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Alabama-LSU game in Baton Rouge tonight (a 6:45
p.m. start), it should be dry and cool with winds averaging about 10 mph and
temperatures in the 50s.

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH: We all know that the 1930s were known as the Dust Bowl
years. During those times, hundreds of farmers and ranchers in the central
plains lost everything they had because their topsoil picked up and took off
during howling dust storms. It resulted in a vast migration of poverty
stricken farmers and ranchers to other parts of the country. Many of them
migrated to California with much hardship enroute. Often they were traveling
by horse and wagon, others with cars that were often dilapidated. On this
date in 1933, one of the frequent major dust storms was in progress. It
darkened the skies from Montana to Ohio on November 12, 1933. The dust was
blown eastward and the next day there was dust in the air from Georgia to
Maine. It resulted in black rain falling in New York and brown snow in
Vermont!

SATURDAY NOTES: The storm that brought us a lot of rain early in the week
also wet down the Eastern Seaboard. In the last 24 hours, around 1.50 inches
or more of rain has fallen in Atlantic City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New
York, Raleigh, Richmond and Washington...the coldest temperature in the
lower 48 this morning was 4 above zero at Saranac Lake, New York. That is
the second time this week that scenic area of Upstate New York has been the
coldest in the country. It will be zero to 10 tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A very busy and frustrating day in my weather
office and it has caused Molly to be perplexed. My son has been here all day
troubleshooting major problems with my computer. He and I have always talked
gruffly with each other, totally in fun, but little Miss Molly is puzzled
and frightened by sudden loud noises. So, she has spent much of the day
cowering in the kitchen as far away from my weather office as she can get.
Steve loves Molly, but she's not so sure. Life goes on despite the
occasional doubts and fears.
