...Showers Monday Night...

Temperatures were once again on the chilly side this morning, with
lows across the area in the 30s. The mercury dropped to 32F at
Anniston and 33F at Tuscaloosa, two of the cooler spots. Pinson did
managed to hit the freezing mark. It was 31F in Crossville and 30F at
Fort Payne. Lows tonight will not be quite as cool, but as we look
toward Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the first widespread freezes of
the season will be possible.

FIRE DANGER HIGH: Low humidities, a fresh northerly wind and
extremely dry vegetation are contributing to a higher than normal fire
danger this afternoon across Central Alabama. Outdoor burning is
strongly discouraged. Humidity levels will be higher on Monday, but
by Tuesday, the fire danger may become extreme behind our next cold
front as strong winds and low humidities conspire to produce wildfire
conditions. We can only hope that showers are more plentiful tomorrow
night than we think they will be.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THOSE SHOWERS: Our winds will shift around to the
southwest on Monday, and moisture levels will come up a bit ahead of
an approaching trough and cold front. Unfortunately, the moisture
will still be rather limited. Clouds will increase Monday night and a
band of showers will move into the Tennessee Valley. It will be
weakening as it moves southeastward. We will call for a chance of
showers during the overnight hours.

FREEZE WARNING TUESDAY NIGHT: Tuesday will feature clearing skies
and a chilly northwest wind. Temperatures will likely stay in the 50s
across the area. Then with an excellent radiation opportunity in
place Tuesday night, temperatures will dip into the 20s over North
Alabama with readings near or just below freezing across Central
sections. This may produce our first significant freeze of the
season. Precautions will have to be taken to protect any tender
vegetation Tuesday night and again Wednesday night. It looks like we
will then stay dry through Sunday, although there could be a shower on
Friday with a passing system.

TROPICS: Extratropical Storm Noel raced north northeastward
overnight. After bringing high winds and tides to Rhode Island,
Massachusetts and Maine, the storm targeted Nova Scotia and is now
over Newfoundland. Up to 150,000 people lost power in Nova Scotia.
Another 14,000 people were without power in New England after winds
gusting to near hurricane force produced dozens of wind damage
reports. A disturbance over the western Caribbean very nearly became
a tropical depression before it moved inland over northeastern
Nicaragua. It will produce life threatening flooding and mudslides
over Honduras and Nicaragua.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The "Yankee" Hurricane hit Miami. The storm
was so-named because it came from a northeasterly direction. This was
rare, because hurricanes almost never approach south Florida from the
northeast. The wind speed exceeds 95 mph at Miami. Following on the
heels of the Labor Day storm, warnings for this hurricane came much
earlier while the storm was still far at sea. More in today's Weather
Blog.
