...Looking For Rain...

It has now not rained in Birmingham since October 25th when 0.02
inches fell. Our rainfall deficit now stands at nearly 21 inches for
the year. Unfortunately, our much anticipated rainfall event for this
Tuesday looks a lot less likely. That's not good news.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Another beautiful weekend is in progress
across Central Alabama on this Saturday. Temperatures have warmed
mostly into the middle and upper 60s after some comfortable morning
lows around 40. A few clouds have been skirting the northeast corner
of the state in a northwesterly flow aloft, but skies over the rest of
the state are clear. Clear and cool conditions will prevail through
the overnight hours tonight. Our winds will gradually veer around to
the southeast by tomorrow, allowing moisture levels to rise slightly
and clouds will reappear. Temperatures tomorrow will look a lot like
today. High pressure will keep us dry through midweek. Showers will
affect the area in the Wednesday through Friday time frame.

NATIONALLY: A series of storm system is affecting the Pacific
Northwest. It will bring lowering snow levels and increasing snowfall
amounts across the Northwest and Rockies. A critical fire danger
will set up once again over Southern California starting tomorrow
through Tuesday as Santa Ana conditions are expected. Thunderstorms
were forming this afternoon over eastern Texas and Louisiana as Gulf
moisture returns to that region.

IN THE TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather over the southern
Caribbean remains rather disorganized. Significant development is not
expected from this system.

EUROPEAN STORM: A powerful North Sea storm, reminiscent of the Great
1953 North Sea Flood, brought the highest storms surges in two decades
to parts of Europe on Friday. Surge levels of ten feet forced closure
of the massive flood gates that protect Rotterdam. In the 1953 storm,
surges that exceeded twelve feet resulted in massive inundation of
across the Netherlands, killing 2,000 people.

TAURID METEOR SHOWER: From SpaceWeather.com…the annual Northern Taurid
meteor shower caused by Comet Encke peaks on Nov. 12th. Although
Taurid rates are normally low, only about five meteors per hour, those
five can be doozies. The shower is a well-known producer of slow,
bright fireballs visible at all hours of the night. If you're outside
after dark this weekend, be alert for Taurids.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: A significant tornado outbreak occurred over
the Veteran's Day weekend in 2002. Between Saturday night, November
9th and Monday morning, November 11th, a total of 76 tornadoes touched
down across seventeen states. Thirty six people died in the outbreak,
which is the second largest tornado outbreak ever observed in the U.S.
in November. More information available on the alabamawx.com blog.
