...Rain By Tomorrow Afternoon...
ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN: Our weather will remain very changeable
through the weekend with an active weather pattern continuing across
the continental U.S. Today, Alabama will be in-between weather
systems, so the day will be dry with a partly sunny sky and a high
close to 60 degrees in most locations. To the west, another major
storm system will begin to get its act together, and snow will
increase over parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, the same area hit so hard
by the big ice storm earlier this week.
THE WEEKEND: The storm system to the west will bring clouds back into
Alabama tonight, and rain will spread into the state from the west
during the mid to late afternoon hours tomorrow. The latest projected
track of the main surface low is from near Shreveport to Nashville,
and onto Boston by Sunday evening. On this track, some warmer air will
try to spread northward into Central Alabama tomorrow, and we have
bumped up highs a bit assuming we get into the warm sector (we are now
forecasting a high of 65 tomorrow. Some thunder is possible, but
severe weather is not expected due to limited instability values.
Rainfall amounts should average around one-half inch, and the best
potential for rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
SNOW FLAKES? As the surface low pulls off to the northeast, much
colder air will roll into Alabama late tomorrow night, and we expect
the rain to change to snow flurries across North Alabama generally in
the 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. time frame. The best chance of snow will
come across the high terrain locations of Northeast Alabama,
especially atop Lookout Mountain. But, even there, accumulation is not
likely due to the warm ground temperatures. The snow flakes will be
mainly a
novelty, especially considering the fact that temperatures here were
close to 80 degrees earlier this week.
The snow flurries will end Sunday morning, and the sky will clear with
sunshine in full force by afternoon. Still, the day will be blustery
and cold with a high only in the low to mid 40s along with a stiff
north wind that will gust to 30 mph at times. Then, Sunday night, with
a clear sky and a diminishing wind, temperatures will drop quickly,
and we expect a low in the mid 20s by daybreak Monday. Some of the
colder valleys will be close to 20 degrees. Then, the first few days
of next week will be cool and dry.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Boston mayor Thomas Menino declared a snow
emergency yesterday; parts of Boston had one foot of snow on the
ground as of last night. And, the snow fun is just beginning; the
weekend storm system is expected to bring heavy snow to the general
area from St. Louis to New England. Blizzard conditions are likely
across much of the Northeast U.S. by Sunday thanks to a very deep
surface low near Boston. Here in Alabama, Birmingham's official rain
total yesterday was only 0.11". Almost all of the rain reports
statewide were under a quarter of an inch.
