...Big Change To Colder Weather Friday...

LOTS OF BIG CHANGES AHEAD: Get ready for a wild ride on the Alabama
weather roller coaster through the weekend. First off, a look back at
the record warmth across Alabama yesterday. Birmingham established a
new daily record high for the second day in a row; yesterday's
official high was 78 degrees, beating the old record of 76 in 1931.
Warmest spot in the state was Montgomery with 82 degrees. Other highs
included 78 in Weaver and Gadsden, 77 in Ashville, 76 in Trussville
and Hayden, and 75 in Hamilton and Jasper. Our average high for
December 11 and 12 is 57 degrees, so many spots were 20 degrees above
normal yesterday.
ANOTHER WARM ONE: Not much change in our weather today; this will be
the last day of this December heat wave; most communities will see a
high today between 75 and 79 degrees with a partly sunny sky after
some early morning fog.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: The big storm that has been parked over the
Southwest U.S. over the last four days will finally weaken and lift
out today. That will be dragging a cold front down into Alabama
tomorrow night, and in advance of the surface boundary we expect a
good chance of showers tomorrow afternoon and evening. Doesn't exactly
look like a robust weather event; rain totals of a quarter-inch or
less are about the best we can do.

A CHILLY WIND RETURNS: Much colder air moves into Alabama on Friday;
we expect a high only in the low 50s over the northern half of the
state. We will be dry on Friday, but a surface low is expected to spin
up by Friday night somewhere near New Orleans, and this wave will
impact Alabama in a big way over the weekend.
We will forecast periods of rain across the northern half of Alabama
on Saturday as the surface low moves from near Biloxi to Atlanta
during the day.For now, it looks like the warm sector and the
associated unstable air will remain over the southern half of the
state, where some strong thunderstorms could be involved. Up on our
end of the state, we figure rain totals on Saturday will average
somewhere between one-half and three-quarters of an inch. Assuming the
warm sector remains over South Alabama, we will probably have a real
hard time getting out of the 40s on Saturday as the rain falls.

SNOW FLAKES? As the low pulls away to the northeast Saturday night,
colder air will drop into Alabama, and there is some chance the rain
could change to light snow before ending. The chance of accumulating
snow for North Alabama looks rather small since the system will be
moving quickly, and the ground is still pretty warm. The best chance
of an inch or two is atop Lookout Mountain up in Northeast Alabama.
Much colder air follows the storm on Sunday, and most communities will
have a hard time getting out of the 30s. We will be below freezing
both Sunday and Monday morning.
