...Sunny Sunday...

Clouds were slow to clear over the Tennessee Valley and parts of
Central Alabama early this morning. Lows were in the 30s. But skies
are now sunny across the area. Temperatures are going to top out
right around 50 degrees this afternoon. Our forecast will be rather
benign for the remainder of the week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature sunshine and a bit of a warmup,
with highs around 60-62. A front will arrive late Monday night, and
Tuesday will be slightly cooler with a breezy north wind. Wednesday
morning will be the coldest of the period, with widespread lows in the
20s. Another fresh supply of cooler air arrives during the day on
Thursday. This will set the stage for another chilly morning on
Friday, when lows will be in the 20s again.

NEXT WEEKEND: It looks like we will have a significant pattern
change by next weekend. The northwesterly flow aloft will quickly
shift around to southwesterly and at the surface, winds will shift
around to southerly. The result will be an increase in moisture. The
subtropical high will remain strong, however, in a position east of
the Carolinas. This will keep the weather battleground to our north
through the weekend. There is low confidence in the weekend forecast
because the models have been flip-flopping back and forth.

SNEAK PEEK HOLIDAY WEEK: Thanksgiving week looks like it will start
off with the frontal boundary to our north sinking into our area.
This means an increased chance of showers in the Tuesday time frame.
A strong surface low has been a mainstay of the models for a few runs,
and this low will move a warm front back north in before a good round
of rain and storms. It could happen in the Wednesday/Thursday area,
giving us a wet and stormy Turkey Day.

NATIONAL NOTES: Things are quiet nationally this morning. The Santa
Ana winds have relaxed over Southern California, reducing the fire
threat there. The lake effect snow belts of the Great Lakes are
expected to light up today as cold air moves over the relatively warm
waters of the lakes. Over the next ten days, two waves of cold air
will overspread the eastern half of the country, keeping temperatures
below normal for much of the period. Drought continues to plague
the West, South Texas, a small part of Wisconsin and the area from
Georgia through western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, eastern
Kentucky and into Virginia.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Hurricane warnings were in effect as late-
season Hurricane Lenny was threatening Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands. Lenny was a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph.
Lenny was not only unusual because of its late-season strength, but
because of its forward movement. Lenny was moving from west to east
across the Caribbean. Lenny was the first hurricane in recorded
history to threaten Puerto Rico from the west, as most storms move
east to west across the Caribbean. The unusual motion meant that some
harbors normally protected from hurricanes were threatened. Lenny
would go on to become a strong category four hurricane with top winds
of 155 mph, making it the strongest November hurricane ever.
