...Remembering A Famous Cold Wave...
On this date in 1940, Birmingham and the Deep South were truly in the
Deep Freeze. It would be one of the longest and deepest cold waves in
American History. More about this famous Arctic outbreak in today's
ABC3340 Weather Blog.
MILDER WEATHER AHEAD: Sunday was a chilly day across North and
Central Alabama. Temperatures in the Tennessee Valley did not get out
of the lower 40s, because of persistent cloud cover. Readings in the
I-20 Corridor were near seasonable norms, in the lower 50s. An
easterly flow will keep things on the cool side again today, with
afternoon readings topping out in the middle and upper 50s. There
will be plenty of clouds around, mixed with some sunshine. The
easterly wedge will begin to break down tonight as southeasterly winds
kick in and a warm front moves north. Look for a few showers Monday
night, perhaps lasting into Tuesday morning. We could 70 degrees on
Tuesday. That looks to be a little optimistic, but middle to upper
60s are not out of the question.
MIDWEEK FRONT: Lots of differences in timing on a strong disturbance
that will push the front back south as a cold front sometime Wednesday
or Thursday. It looks most likely to occur Wednesday night. It will
be preceded by rain and perhaps a couple of storms Wednesday afternoon
and night. It will be breezy and warm ahead of the system, with
southerly winds of 10-20 mph and temperatures in the 60s on
Wednesday. Temperatures will fall quickly behind the front, falling
into the forties by Thursday morning and staying there through the
day. In fact, temperatures may fall into the 30s during the day
Thursday. It is not out of the question that there could be some
light snow on the back side of the system if the moisture hangs around
for a bit.
GULF SYSTEM? There are indications that a low pressure system will
develop over the Gulf by Friday and move northeast. It appears that
the front and the track of the low will be far enough south to keep
precipitation out of our area, but it will have to be monitored. As
the low sweeps by to the south, even colder air will plunge into
Alabama. We will see very cold temperatures Saturday morning when
lows will be in the lower and middle 20s, with teens in the colder
locations of North Alabama. The weekend should be dry. The pattern
will flip again by the next weekend with a couple of big storm systems
to follow.
ON THIS DATE IN 1967: The City of Chicago had been basking in
unusually balmy winter weather. Residents marveled at the string of
beautiful sunny days, with temperatures even rising into the 60s. On
the 24th, a record high of 67F was recorded. But the next day, a cold
front sent the mercury plummeting and snow was forecast for the 26th.
Initial predictions called for one to two inches of the white stuff.
The snow started falling at 5:02 a.m. on January 26th. As people
headed to work, the forecast was changed to up to four inches. The
snow continued to fall throughout the day, and weather forecasters
couldn't keep up with it. Forecasts had to be constantly revised
upwards until reports called for up to fifteen inches. Twenty-nine
hours after it started, the unprepared city of Chicago was buried
under twenty-three inches of snow. It still stands as Chicago's
greatest snowstorm.
