...Changeable Weather For Alabama...

BEST CHANCE OF RAIN AT MIDWEEK: This is not one of those sealed in
stone forecasts for Alabama. The weather will be changeable over the
next several days and there is always a chance that the timing could
get out of phase. This is what we think: only a slight chance of rain
tonight after midnight; a few showers tomorrow, but it is going to be
noticeably warmer, SW winds of 10-20 mph will shoot the thermometer
upward to about 68. That will not last long, because another cold
front will be entering NW Alabama Wednesday morning and moving all the
way through the state by Wednesday night. There will be a better
chance of some rain in connection with that front and temperatures
will be falling during the day.

We may start off with temperatures in the 50s and then dropping into
the 40s all afternoon and into the 30s Wednesday evening. Colder
temperatures can be expected Thursday and Friday. We believe both of
those days should be generally dry. Clouds will be moving out on
Thursday, leaving us with mostly sunshine on Friday. Our coldest
temperatures will come Friday morning with mid to upper 20s and
Saturday morning with low 20s. A high-pressure area should be over us
on Saturday morning, so some of the traditional North Alabama cold
spots may have some upper teens at that time.

ANY SNOW IN OUR PICTURE: Not really, but as the colder air moves in
there could be a mix of light rain and snow mixed over the NW corner
of the state Wednesday morning. There could even be a few patches of
light freezing rain on the higher ridges of NE Alabama.

OWENSBORO: We are using that North Kentucky city as an example of
some very serious wintry weather that is going to affect a wide area.
Wintry weather will exist from North Texas and Oklahoma NE through
Arkansas, Missouri, NW Tennessee and up the Ohio Valley into New York
State. Take note of these excerpts from the official forecast for
Owensboro. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until midday Wednesday,
so this will be a long drawn out event. As much as 2 to 6 inches of
freezing rain, snow and sleet expected to accumulate tonight with ice
thickness of about ¼ inch. Snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue
Tuesday with additional snow and sleet accumulation up to 3 inches and
additional freezing rain about ¼ inch. Bottom line: they are expecting
a storm total of snow and sleet accumulation of 5 to 9 inches.

In Northern Arkansas, the ice load may become so heavy that power
outages could last for many days. Travel is highly discouraged and may
become impossible.

GLOBAL ROAMING: This is hard to believe, but about 4 inches of snow
fell early in the weekend in the NE part of the United Arab Emirates.
That is desert country sandwiched between Oman and Saudi Arabia. It
was only the second snow event in memory. It was bitter cold over the
northeast again this morning. The official cold spot for the USA was
Masardis, Maine with 44 below. In my 500 years of weather work, I have
never seen that station mentioned.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I got a letter from USA Today this
morning. They tell me that because I am a continuing subscriber and
let me charge it to my credit card, that they are going to plant a
tree in my name somewhere in a national forest. I am going to write
them and ask where the J.B. tree is and go there and camp by it for a
week. A bit of excitement along our walking track Saturday morning.
The beautiful little 5-pound Yorkie that belongs to our neighbor got
ambushed by a larger dog. The little guy had a bloody knee and lower
leg, but not really injured. He was very scared when Molly and I
happened upon the scene, but the sight of Molly made him relax and wag
his tail. Molly is overdosed on ballgames over the weekend, but that
is only temporary. Life goes on.
