...No Snow In Our Forecast...

A GUMBO SOUP OF WEATHER: That is what I call the events yesterday.
There were so many different items on the weather menu and we had to
look at every one. That included heavy rain, flash floods, snow, a
variety of winter weather advisories, river flood warnings, flash
flood warnings and even a gravity wave. Because of so much going on,
the gravity wave in NW Alabama got little coverage. It happened during
the late morning in the NW corner of the state. Trees were uprooted
over two counties, including numerous trees coming down about 3 miles
south of Florence.

CATCHING UP: Amazing amount of rain across Alabama in the last 48 to
60 hours. Vic Bell, our Skywatcher for Black Creek and Etowah County,
reported 7.38 inches the last two days, bringing the total for the
year to 58.16 inches. He is at least 5 inches above normal for the
entire year. Other 48-hour totals:

7.39 Bear Creek
5.98 Broomtown
6.05 Noccalula Falls
6.44 NorthFork
10.00 Downtown Columbus, Miss. (thanks to Tom Waller)
Most of the snow fell in NW Alabama and it appears that Hackleburg
received one of the bigger amounts—around 4 inches. Some flurries fell
further south.

NEGATIVE REMARKS: We received an overdose of very angry remarks about
not getting enough snow yesterday. Most of those came in on the 33/40
Blog and by e-mail. Those Blog posts are anonymous using a screen
name. That has been going on for years. I remember a missed forecast
when I was in the NWS in the 1980s when we got over 80 telephone calls
the next day complaining. Virtually none of those were vicious.
Society has changed. We will roll with the punches. Life goes on.

WHAT IS AHEAD? Check our day-by-day forecast, but the weekend will be
generally pleasant with highs 55 to 60. Next showers arrive early in
the week.

GREAT BIG MOON: Be sure and check out the moon tonight. It is
supposed to appear as the biggest of the year. Gilbert Nicholson
reminds us that the sun sets one hour earlier today at 4:40 than it
did about 6 weeks ago.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Our storm went on to dump huge amounts of
rain up the east coast, including 4.23 as far north as Atlantic City
and 2.80 at Boston.
There is a misconception that it is more difficult to forecast snow in
the Deep South than other places. Not true. One time a major city in
the NE had no snow in the forecast and got a crippling blizzard. There
was almost a congressional investigation. Low temperatures this
morning included 27 below zero at International Falls and Cook,
Minnesota. The Alaska low was 32 below at Ft. Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I may have to have a conference with
Little Miss Molly. She indirectly caused me to fall out of bed in the
middle of the night. She was sound asleep so tightly against my legs
that I tried to slide off the bed and I wound up sprawled on the
floor. I crawled down to the foot of the bed to get leverage to pick
myself up. That little rascal came down to the foot of the bed and
dangled her head over the end to look at me and I am almost certain
she was laughing. I was not hurt. I will still play ball with her
today. Life goes on.
