...No Current Snow Threats...

THE OLD THERMOMETER IS TRENDING MILDER: After a good snow scare and
some very cold temperatures, Alabama weather is trending the other
way. Instead of highs in the 30s, we will see some 60 to 65-degree
temperatures from Sunday all the way through next week. Nights will be
fairly comfortable too, mostly 50 or better.
Flooding is still a problem today in a number of locations around
Alabama and I do not mean flash flooding. Instead, it is the flooding
of rivers and streams. We have not had much of that in the last couple
of years due to a continuing drought. The water levels will slowly
recede and we do not believe that showers expected later this week
will be heavy enough to send the rivers back out of their banks.

There were some amazing rain totals over the last several days with
two-day totals, commonly 5 to 7 inches, in a number of Central and
North Alabama locations. It is almost certain now that Birmingham will
end the year with at least a slight excess. Amazingly, some West
Central and NW Alabama locations had to deal with flash flooding and
accumulating snow at the same time. While many in NW Alabama were
enjoying the snow, it is too bad that a tragic accident happened north
of Hamilton on US-43. A woman died in the accident and a boy was
seriously injured.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC Championship Football game is at 1:00 this
afternoon at Legion Field in Birmingham featuring Grambling and
Jackson State. Perfect football weather, dry and cool, with about 52
at kick off and 48 by the end of the game. The wind will be SE at 6-12
mph, so if you are sitting in the stands, you will need to dress
fairly warmly.

A KNOCKOUT ICE STORM: An ice storm of historic proportions has hit
the NE USA. According to press reports, an estimated 1.5 million
people were without power in the Northeast. The ice load on trees and
utility lines is horrendous. It may be sometime next week before some
of the people can get power back. That storm system dumped a lot of
rain also with about 3 inches at both Boston, Atlantic City and New
York City.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: A bitter 32 below zero Saturday morning was
the low at Embarrass, Minnesota. 36 below was the coldest in Alaska at
Ft. Yukon. Warmest Saturday afternoon was 76 in Tucson.

ENORMOUS COLD AIR OUTBREAK: It is poised to pour into the USA
following a big storm system moving on the Pacific Northwest coast.
Late last night, winds were already gusting to 60 mph along the
Washington coast with 17-foot seas. Blizzards will spread across that
region of the country and all the way to the Upper Midwest. We are
going to hear of some very dramatic weather events in the coming week.
