ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Strange October Weather...

SINGING IN THE RAIN: We might as well relax and sing. We sure cannot
do anything about the weather. We are awestruck like everybody else by
the way this October is acting. After being in weather for what seems
like a century, I do not remember an October just like this one unless
there was a tropical storm involved.

Sure would be interesting to know how many tons of rain fell on
Alabama overnight and today. It would shock us all. But we have to
measure that in inches and many parts of the state were drenched with
about all the water the soil could absorb. Bottom line: the rest of it
was runoff and started making its way back to the Gulf of Mexico. We
will try to post some more rain amounts on the 33/40 BLOG later this
afternoon, but numerous locations received between 2 and 3 inches
which triggered some flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch was issued late last night for much of North and
Central Alabama. The Tennessee Valley counties were cleared of that
this afternoon. In the Birmingham area, there was flash flooding this
morning at a number of locations—unfortunately during the morning
drive.

NOW WHAT? More of the same, although the showers and storms will come
in clusters or groups Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday looks
like it could be our stormiest day with showers and storms, including
some possible strong storms. We may have to deal with a few severe
thunderstorms on that day. Why Thursday? That is the day that a low-
pressure area will be tracking across our part of the country and
pulling down some cooler air from the north. By Saturday, any showers
should be limited to morning and brisk NW wind will make you want to
wear a light wrap. Looking ahead to the weekend, do not be surprised
to see a low in the lower 40s by Sunday morning and possibly a 38 in
the NE Alabama valleys.

RAIN SCORECARD: At Birmingham Airport, the numbers for 2009 are
simply amazing. The 2.54 inches received since midnight swelled the
October total to 4.89 inches and the year to 57.24. Our surplus is now
an amazing 14.42 inches. That is almost a three-month supply.

THE GOOD OLD USA: Lots of interesting weather around this great
country. This morning the temperature dropped to 2 below zero at St.
Mary, Montana. I am almost sure that is the first time this season for
a sub-zero temperature. That is not a high mountain station. The
lowest in Alaska was 25 at Barrow. In Billings, Montana, the first 11
days of October have averaged the coldest ever, in fact, over 6
degrees colder than any other record. Over the weekend, there was 17
inches of snow at Virginia Dale, Colorado and 10 inches at
Chugwater, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was around 3:00 a.m. My little pal
heard heavy rain pattering on the roof. Believe it or not,
she has learned to connect rain with thunder and lightning. She
immediately started petitioning for one of us to get up so she could
go to one of her safe places. So we are short on sleep. Little Miss
Molly has had several play sessions over the weekend with the little
Yorkie from up the street. Tom Taylor, the human grandfather of little
Dino, took a nice digital photograph of Molly and Dino together
Sunday. They are inseparable. Life goes on.
