...Scattered Storms This Week...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were a welcome sight across
Alabama on Sunday as moisture levels started to increase across the
area. I would estimate that about 40 percent of the northern two
thirds of the state picked up rain, with most amounts less than a
quarter inch. Some luckier locations received one half to one inch.
Probably the big winner according to Doppler radar estimates was
northern Marengo County, where a bulls eye of three inches over a
small area north of Linden. A severe thunderstorm was issued for a
brief time for eastern Jefferson and eastern Shelby Counties. Trees
were snapped off just east of Centreville in Bibb County by a strong
storm just after 3 p.m. Summertime thunderstorms typically produce a
great deal of lightning, and some of these did just that. This is
Lightning Safety Week and a good time to remember your lightning
safety rules.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A huge surface high is over the western
Atlantic. This is allowing large amounts of tropical moisture to flow
into the Deep South. Ridging to the east of Alabama should gradually
break down with time and we will go from the periphery of the moist
flow to more in the middle of it. This means good chances for
scattered showers and thunderstorms each day this week, much like
yesterday. Today and tomorrow may work out to be some of the best
chances, with a weak trough of low pressure over the state.

LATE WEEK FRONT? By late in the week, a big upper level trough
should start to be carved out over the eastern United States. As it
does, this will allow cooler air down into the eastern third of the
country. We could see a fairly respectable front for this time of
year wedging into the Southeast from the north and northeast come late
Friday into Saturday. It could hang around into Sunday, and hopefully
it will, because this could spell an opportunity for good chances for
showers and thunderstorms then. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet for the time being. No
disturbances are threatening to develop into tropical cyclones at this
time. Tropical cyclone 3B in the Bay of Bengal has caused tremendous
flooding in India and Pakistan.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Lightning struck four rock climbers on
Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park CA. Fortunately, the
victims all survived, but many climbers are not so lucky. Climbers
have to carefully check weather forecasts, which often include mention
of thunderstorms. In the west, it is generally safer to climb in the
morning hours, because most thunderstorms occur after noon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1749: Drought had gotten so bad in Massachusetts
that people were called on to fast as fields and forests burned in an
effort to remove God's punishment.
