...Afternoon Storms Again Today...

Once again today, we will forecast an array of scattered afternoon
showers and thunderstorms across Alabama, much like the ones we have
seen during the past four days. Unfortunately, there is no skill at
telling you exactly when and where it will rain this afternoon, but
the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three by late
afternoon.

TO THE NORTH: A surface front is drifting southward in our direction,
and we will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms across
North Alabama tonight as outflow boundaries from storms to the north
could keep the convection going. That same front should bring
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon as
the boundary pushes down toward the Alabama/Tennessee border. Most
Alabama communities have a decent chance of picking up one-half to one
inch of rain during the next 48 hours.

The front should become stationary somewhere over North Alabama on
Sunday; we will maintain the chance of scattered showers and storms on
Sunday, but the most numerous ones could very well be south of
Birmingham. Then, drier air slowly filters into the state on Monday
and Tuesday of next week, and on those days it looks like most of the
scattered storms will be confined to the western and southern counties
of Alabama.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: Still looks like routine early July weather for
Alabama for the holiday; on Wednesday of next week the sky should be
partly to mostly sunny, and any afternoon showers and storms should be
rather widely spaced. The high will be in the low to mid 90s in most
communities.

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge a few scattered showers and
storms on daily basis along the Gulf coast from Panama City westward
to Gulf Shores through next week, but we sure don't expect a wash-out.
Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day, and the sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a warm 85
degrees.

THURSDAY'S STORMS: Strong thunderstorm winds in the community of New
Site (Tallapoosa County) damaged several city buildings, including
City Hall and the Fire Department. There was damage to a gymnasium
roof, and numerous trees were blown down. There was also some wind
damage in Cullman County in the communities of Hanceville and Joppa.
Rain totals included 1.60" at Cordova, 1.35" at Hollins (Clay County),
1.08" at Pell City, 1.00" at Jemison, .82" at Vincent, .69" at
Gadsden, .51" at Cheaha State Park, .22" at Oneonta, and .18" in
downtown Jasper at the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM site atop the King Building.

ROAMING: Yesterday's high in Duluth, Minnesota was only 64 degrees;
the high in Chicago was 71. In contrast, sizzling heat is cranking up
in the Desert Southwest; the high in Phoenix yesterday was 111
degrees.
