...Some Sun; A Few Storms...

LET'S CELEBRATE SOME GOOD RAIN: The most widespread showers and storms
yesterday were over the western side of Alabama. The small community
of Hubbertville, in northern Fayette County, picked up a remarkable
4.02" of rain during a nearly stationary, strong thunderstorm. Other
totals included 1.82" in the Flatwoods neighborhood in Northport, .89"
at Pelham, .85" at Cuba (in the southern part of Sumter County near
the Mississippi line), and .49" at the ABC 33/49 SKYCAM location on
top of the Daniel Building on 20th Street in downtown Birmingham. The
Birmningham Airport, where the records are kept, measured only .12".
Of course, we must point out the fact that many neighborhoods remained
bone dry due to the scattered nature of the showers and storms.

TODAY AND TOMORROW: We don't expect any serious change in the weather
during the next 48 hours; hot and humid weather continues with highs
in the 90 to 94 degree range, and the chance of a few scattered,
mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Some drier air
could creep in here from the east, meaning the best chance of catching
an afternoon storm will probably remain on the western side of
Alabama.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: We still expect a general increase in the number of
showers and thunderstorms on these days as a nice upper air trough
forms over the eastern part of the U.S., and a surface front
approaches from the north (notice we don't call it a "cold" front!).
The latest computer model data has slowed the system down a bit, so it
looks like Saturday will be the day with the best coverage of showers
and thunderstorms. Drier air will try to slip into North Alabama
Sunday, and a majority of the showers and storms by Sunday and Monday
could very well be south of Birmingham.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The 2007 Hurricane Season is rolling along rather
quietly; the Atlantic basin remains quiet and tropical storm formation
is not expected for the rest of the week.

THE WIDE WORLD OF WEATHER: Rain continues to fall where they don't
need it; another 2.15" of rain fell on the Dallas/Fort Worth area
yesterday with more flooding problems. Water was reported up to the
windows of cars in Haltom City, near Fort Worth. A number of water
rescues were needed in several North Texas counties. In Europe,
thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes amid severe
flooding across England and Wales that is now believed to have claimed
four lives. The hot spots in the U.S. yesterday were in the desert of
Arizona, both Bullhead City and Gila Bend reported 114 degrees. The
coldest spot in the continental U.S. was Stanley, Idaho with a frosty
24 degrees.
