...Another Hot One...

Yesterday was one of the hottest days of the year so far in Alabama.
The mercury topped out at 97F at the Birmingham Airport, 98F at
Tuscaloosa and 99F at Anniston. Pinson hit the century mark with a
high of 100F. Temperatures today will rival those of yesterday, but
most likely will not exceed them. The record high for today at
Birmingham is 99F. I think we will fall just short of it again.

STRAY STRONG STORM TODAY? We will be on the lookoiut through the
afternoon for the development of a couple of stray storms thanks to a
passing upper level disturbance that might allow something to get
started. If one does, it will have the opportunity to become strong
quickly given the high amount of thermodynamic energy available.
Coverage will be slim, but if you are lucky enough to get underneath
one of these thunderboomers, enjoy. Just be careful of the lightning.
This is lightning safety week coming up and we don't want you to be
an example.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Once again today, Jefferson and Shelby County are
under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Ozone. And once again, air
quality will be unhealthy for sensitive individuals. Take steps to
reduce emissions.

LOOKING AHEAD: Moisture levels are on the increase across Alabama.
The increased moisture will allow for widely scattered thunderstorms
to develop each day through midweek. Any of those storms could be on
the strong side. By Thursday, an approaching, an approaching
shortwave will serve to enhance our shower and thunderstorms chances.
Meanwhile, a large longwave trough will be developing over the eastern
United States. This will send a cool front southward towards Alabama
and the Deep South. It looks like the best chance for rain will come
Friday and linger into Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: An Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 crashed at JFK
airport in New York City killing 113 of the 124 people on board. The
tower never experienced the microburst, which was held back by a
seabreeze front. Plane crashed 2400 feet short of the runway. Famed
tornado researcher Theodore Fujita studied the incident and discovers
that the crash was caused by a microburst. His research leads to
improved air safety.

REMEMBERING AUDREY: At 10:30 p.m. on June 24, 1957, the Weather
Bureau in New Orleans issued the first advisory on a tropical
depression in the Bay of Campeche. The decision was based on
meteorological data and a radio report from a shrimp boat. The
depression was located 300 miles south of Brownsville TX. The storm
would become Hurricane Audrey, moving northward over the next 3 days
and striking near the Louisiana/Texas border causing extreme loss of
life. More about the 7th deadliest hurricane in U.S. history in
today's Weather Blog.
