...Moderating Temperatures...
Tuesday was a chilly, gray day across Alabama. The mercury struggled
to reach 40 at the Birmingham Airport, Anniston and Tuscaloosa. It
never made it at Vinemont. But things will be getting better today.
With a return of sunshine, temperatures will warm into the lower 50s
across the area. Tonight will be another chilly one, but not
unreasonably so, with lows dropping to near freezing. It is December
after all. It will feel definitely milder tomorrow as our winds shift
around to the southeast around retreating high pressure. Those
shifting winds are a sign of changes to come.
NEXT STORM SYSTEM: Clouds will be on the increase tomorrow night
and should be completely cloudy by Friday morning. Low pressure will
develop over the Texas Panhandle on Thursday and start the trek to the
northeast. A steep pressure gradient will develop between the fairly
strong low and the stubborn high pressure to the east of us, setting
up an efficient transport of relatively warm and moist air back into
the state. Showers may reach western sections of the state by early
Friday morning along and ahead of an advancing warm front. There
could be a few elevated storms involved. It will be increasingly
windy on Friday, with winds averaging up to 15-25 and gusting higher.
A line of strong storms will advance across Mississippi Friday
afternoon, reaching western Alabama during the late night hours.
There is a chance of severe weather with this system, even though the
nighttime arrival will be in our favor.
WEEKEND: Thunderstorms will sweep quickly east, exiting into Georgia
by mid-morning. Some temporary clearing will set in during the dry
with a healthy dry slot, but clouds should wrap back in late in the
day and be with us on Sunday. Cloudy, cold and raw conditions are all
the rage this season it seems and Sunday will be a trademark raw day.
There could be a little light rain or drizzle over northern sections,
and with an upper low close by, we will watch for a little colder
atmosphere and the chance of a few flakes of that s word, but don't
get your hopes up. It looks like all the local New Years Eve
celebrations will be dry, but chilly.
POST WEEKEND: It looks like high pressure will be the weather
watchword as we head into the first week of the New Year. Look for
another big rainmaker around the 7th or 8th of January.
ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An unusual summer storm packing winds of
cyclone magnitude struck the 115 sailboats of the famed Sydney to
Hobart yacht race. Six sailors died and 55 had to be rescued in a
heroic air and sea effort that included night helicopter sorties to
pull people out of the water. Storm warnings had been issued for the
race participants, but pressure caused officials to allow the race to
begin on time. Computer models did not have the resolution to show
the full intensity of the storm's hurricane force winds and 30 foot
seas. Families of the victims blamed the meteorologists and race
officials for not intervening.
