Happy Boxing Day .....

What the heck is Boxing Day? There are numerous stories as to the
origin of the name. Most of the stories relate to Christmas bonuses.
Employers would put coins or money in boxes on the day after Christmas
for their employees. In some places, the bonus might take the form of
food or other goods, that were boxed up and distributed on December
26th. Another explanation is that Christmas was a time of over
indulgence for some wealthy families, and disputes would inevitably
arise. Boxing matches often settled these disagreements, hence the
name. Whatever the source, Boxing Day refers to the day after
Christmas.

WEATHER IN A WORD… Miserable. That would be an apt description for
today's weather across North and Central Alabama. Cloudy, cold and
breezy, with a few sprinkles or snow flurries early. The mercury will
actually continue falling until mid-morning, and then only recovering
into the lower or middle 40s with a chill north wind. Skies may
remain cloudy all day , with clearing not setting in until very late
this afternoon or this evening. Fair skies and diminishing winds will
allow temperatures to drop to just below freezing.

MIDWEEK MODERATION: Wednesday should dawn fair and cool, with
temperatures near normal for this time of year, meaning highs in the
lower 50s. High pressure will slide east of us on Thursday, allowing
for a nice return southerly flow of Gulf moisture, but we should enjoy
a good deal of sunshine still. Temperatures will edge back up to
around 60. Clouds will be on the increase overnight.

LATE WEEK STORM: By Friday morning, low pressure will be spinning up
over southeastern Oklahoma, heading northeast. A strong southerly
flow will give us increasing moisture and instability as a cold front
approaches from the west. Showers and storms will break out by late
in the day. A squall line will move through the state on Saturday.
There is a chance that we will deal with severe weather with this
system, so stay tuned…

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City
records its greatest snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the
27th, Central Park received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches,
while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not
accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel
was brought to a standstill. Twenty seven deaths occurred as a result
of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated ten million tons of snow
cost over $8 million. Nineteen inches of snow fell in just six hours
at White Plains, New York.
