...Santa Will Be Wet...

Santa will need his wet weather gear tonight as he makes the rounds
across North and Central Alabama. Low pressure moving out of the Gulf
will bring us increasing rain chances by mid-afternoon, continuing
through the overnight hours and into early Christmas Day.

CHRISTMAS STORM SYSTEM: Cloudiness increased rapidly during the
overnight hours with mostly gray skies around to greet the day on this
Christmas Eve. There were just a few peeks of sunshine around my
house this morning. Hopefully you caught one. We may not see much of
the yellow orb until Tuesday. Low pressure is off the Texas Coast
with a warm front draped along the Gulf coast. This warm front will
move northward tonight as the low moves northeast and this means
increasing rain chances for us. The rain should start to show up on
local radars by late afternoon and build into a soaking rain
overnight. Rainfall amounts could average one to inches by noon
tomorrow. Today's highs will top out around 60 degrees, with middle
40s tonight. Wind chimes across the area will welcome Santa as
eastern winds pick up to 8-16 mph tonight ahead of the low. Hopefully
there won't be too many missed approaches on area rooftops tonight…

CHRISTMAS DAY: Rain should diminish during the morning, but some
light showers will continue through the day on Christmas Day on the
backside of our low as it exits to the northeast. We are still
expecting a strong upper trough to rotate across the area Christmas
night. As it does, the cold air affiliated with this system will cool
the atmosphere sufficiently to allow some residual moisture to mix
with and eventually change over to a little light snow from the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston areas northward. The best chance
for this to occur will be after midnight tomorrow night. Snow fans
will likely be disappointed, as surface temperatures will remain too
warm for significant accumulation.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Clouds and perhaps a few snow flurries will continue
into Tuesday morning, with clearing skies later in the day. Colder
air will follow the system, with highs on Tuesday limited to the
middle 40s. Tuesday night will be the coldest night of the week, as
the mercury drops into the upper 20s. Wednesday should be a nice day
with high pressure overhead and temperatures that are near normal for
December. By Thursday, our winds will turn back to the southeast in
response to the retreating high pressure cell and a developing low to
our west. This storm system will bring increasing clouds on Friday
and increasing rain chances on Saturday, with a soaking rain Saturday
night into New Years Eve, Sunday. There could be thunderstorms
involved.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: 45F at Miami FL shattered their previous
record low for the date by 20 degrees. The low at Key West FL fell to
44F, to establish their all-time record low. Huntsville AL dropped to
1F. In Birmingham, we hit 4F.
