...Brighter Days; A Cooling Trend...

After a brief period of low clouds and fog this morning, sunshine returns to
Alabama today following yesterday's soaking. Temperatures should reach the
low 60s, about 7 to 10 degrees above normal for late January.

A developing, deep, cold upper trough over the Northeast U.S. will bring
colder air into the state tonight and tomorrow. Early morning temperatures
should be close to freezing both tomorrow and Thursday, with daytime highs
in the 50s. The air will remain very dry and there is no chance of rain here
through mid-week.

NEXT RAIN: Clouds will return to the state at the end of the week, and we
will be dealing with some rain at times over the weekend as another weather
system moves in from the west. At this point it looks like the best chance
of rain will come from late Saturday afternoon, through Saturday night and
into Sunday morning. At this point we don't expect any severe weather, but
another good soaking is possible.

WILL FEBRUARY MAKE US SHIVER? The wave pattern across the Northern
Hemisphere shows signs of changing next month, and the pattern favors some
of the very cold air near the pole dropping southward into the U.S. Way too
early to be specific, but generally speaking we expect February to be much
colder than January for much of the nation, including the Deep South.

LOTS OF RAIN: Totals across Alabama yesterday included 2.54" at Muscle
Shoals, 2.28" at Munford, 1.89" at Coldwater, 1.72" at Inverness, 1.63" at
Riverchase, 1.56" at Meadowbrook, 1.43" at Moundville, and 1.02" at Jasper.

Birmingham's total for the year (based on data from the Airport) is up to
5.43", meaning we have a surplus of 1.26" since January 1.
