ANOTHER SOAKING: It happened overnight and this morning especially over the
north and central portions of the state. It was enough to cause the
Birmingham rainfall total for the month to show an excess of over an inch.
We had become so accustomed to the deficiency word.
The heaviest rain was over the northwest counties of Alabama where flash
flooding occurred during the night. This was mainly in parts of
Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties including the Florence area.

For most of the state it was a very warm Sunday. The temperature soared to
78 in Montgomery. Anniston and Selma had 74, Tuscaloosa 73 and Birmingham
72. That is 20 degrees above normal! It was 77 in Evergreen today.

NOW WHAT? Today's wet weather will be replaced by dry weather for the rest
of the week. Extra bonus will be lots of sunshine. An even extra bonus will
be relatively mild daytime temperatures which should be more help on your
next heating bill. We still do not see any bitter cold weather in the near
future. Even next weekend, highs should be in the lower 60s.

DOWNSIDE: One of our daily readers (and a neighbor) reminded us that we
NEED some real cold weather, otherwise we will be overrun by bugs next
summer. I definitely agree. Maybe we can do that in February. Snuffy Smith
refers to all those as varmints. Gnats, spiders, fleas, wood roaches,
mosquitoes, you name it. I did not see hardly any mosquitoes last summer,
not sure I saw any! It does not take much cold to wipe out the mosquitoes
but the others are much more stubborn.

MOTHER OF ALL BLUE NORTHERS: It happened on this date in 1916 at Browning,
Mont., when the temperature dropped 100 degrees in 24 hours from 44 above
zero to 56 below. I have seen 65-degree drops in Alabama in about 48 hours,
but nothing to compare to that. I still plan to write a story about "blue
northers" on the blog one day this week. They are a legendary term in the
Great Plains, but never a term you will see in a forecast...coldest
temperature in the lower 48 states this morning was 27 below at Gunnison,
Colorado...in Alaska, the coldest was 45 below at Galena...over the weekend,
the temperature dropped as low as 62 below zero at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Had to add another no-no to my Little Miss
Molly list. I had tricked her into letting me take a 30-minute power nap in
my ex-recliner. (Molly seized it by the eminent domain law so now I have to
seek permission from her.) A few seconds later that little 9-pound activist
came strolling from behind the recliner with a dime in her mouth. When I
reclined, coins had rolled out of my pocket into the inner workings of the
recliner. One rolled out on the floor and she found it. She never misses
anything on her hourly inspections. She reminds me of a very efficient night
watchman. I had the horrible thought of "what if" she had swallowed the dime
and stomach surgery needed. I could not take that. So now, it is empty
pockets before reclining..for the first time in a long, long time, we saw
the CC (Community Cat) I did not let Molly see it because I did not want to
lean back on the leash with a 30-degree angle to slow Molly's rocket launch.
Life goes on, even with scares at times.
