GOOD AFTERNOON! Bill Murray here, into the saddle for an unusual Friday
afternoon appearance as J.B. attends the traditional annual ABC3340 weather
intern lunch. It is going to be an interesting weekend, weather wise, here
in Alabama as we keep one eye on an active tropical scene and one eye on an
approaching cold front.

TROPICS: It has been a quiet season so far in the tropical Atlantic. We
still have not see our first tropical storm, but that may be about to
change. The most important disturbance to us here in Alabama is a weak
surface low in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Thunderstorm activity with
this feature continues to be non-existent, but there is the potential for
this system to develop as it moves northwest and then north across the Gulf
of Mexico. By Sunday afternoon, it should be about 250 miles south of
Pensacola. It could be a tropical depression, or perhaps even a tropical
storm by then. It should reach the northern Gulf somewhere between New
Orleans and Pensacola on Monday.

The second system is an upper level low over the Atlantic, east of the
northern Bahamas. This system is certainly more impressive on satellite
this morning and there is still evidence of a closed low pressure system at
the surface now. The system has potential to develop into a tropical
depression as it moves northwest. An Air Force Reconnaissance plane is
enroute to investigate this system as I write this. It will impact the
Carolinas.

OUR WEATHER: Low pressure over Missouri this afternoon is trailing a cold
front back into eastern Texas. There are lots of showers and storms in
advance of this front. Showers and storms are on the increase here in
Alabama, as well, in response to increasing moisture levels. The front make
it to about Memphis Saturday morning before it begins to grind to a halt.
It will remain stationary or weaken just to the northwest of Alabama for the
remainder of the weekend. This will mean a good chance of showers and
storms at times during the weekend. The Gulf tropical system may increase
our rain chances in the Monday-Tuesday time frame. We will have to wait and
see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: Famous Hurricane Celia was born on this date in the
Northwest Caribbean Sea. The system had been tracked all the way across the
Atlantic since it came off the African Coast on July 23. Celia would go on
to become the most destructive storm until that time to strike the Lone Star
State, producing nearly $500 million in damage. Celia is unusual because
its winds were its greatest weapon. Normally, storm surge is usually the
most dangerous part of a landfalling hurricane. Because of where Celia
reached the coast, near Corpus Christi, damage from the storm surge was
negligible. Celia is notable because of a massive burst of wind that struck
much of the city of Corpus Christi. After several minutes of 80 mph
sustained winds, the anemometer suddenly jumped to a peak of 161 mph for
several seconds. Eyewitnesses all over the city reported the same
phenomenon. The powerful winds were very destructive. So, Carla (1961) was
stronger and larger, but Celia produced more damage. Only 16 people died in
the storm.
