THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Showers and thunderstorms are moving to the
southeast across North and West Alabama this Saturday afternoon. The rain
area is associated with a surface trough and attendant cool front that is
pushing across western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. With a very
tropical airmass in place across the South, rainfall rates have been
impressive. One to two inch amounts per hour have been common, and some
flash flooding has occurred as a result. Water was reported over road early
this morning in Colbert County. Flash flood warnings were issued for
Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin Counties.

The storms have also been prodigious lightning producers, putting out a sea
of strikes, especially across West Central Alabama. One storm in Pickens
County briefly showed indications of being severe around noon, but no
significant reports of severe weather have been received.

Showers and thunderstorms were approaching the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa
metro areas at 1 p.m. The storms near the Mississippi border are stronger,
but any storms this afternoon will be capable of very dangerous lightning
and very heavy rainfall. We can't rule out the possibility of an isolated
report of wind damage or two. Additional warnings might be required, but
severe weather watches are not expected to be necessary.

TONIGHT: A few showers and storms were forming back over Mississippi behind
the main rain area and ahead of the cool front. So, we will have to leave
in a chance of showers and thunderstorms for the overnight hours.

WHERE WILL FRONT END UP? I have a hunch that the front will hang up to the
northwest of us here in Central Alabama. This will keep us in shower and
storm chances tomorrow. Indications are that drier air will begin to filter
in to Alabama on Monday, sending those rain chances into a downward trend.
So, as we head into the new week, looks like things will be getting drier
and hotter. Expect mostly sunny to at worst partly cloudy skies Monday and
Tuesday, with only the slightest chance of a PM storm. There is a chance
that a northwesterly flow aloft could send a thunderstorm complex our way,
but only time will tell. Another front will approach the state late in the
week, once again increasing those shower and storm chances.

TROPICS: Our up and down disturbance off the east Coast of Florida has
flared up a little today. An Air Force plane finished its reconnaissance
mission shortly after noon and is headed back to base at Keesler. The
system is about 250 miles east southeast of Savannah, Georgia. As it moves
west northwest at about 10 mph, it will probably reach land Sunday evening,
somewhere along the Georgia or South Carolina coast. The weak low pressure
system over the southern Gulf of Mexico still shows no organization this
afternoon. Even if it were to develop, it would be slow now. It should
continue westward toward the Texas coast.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A rare killer tornado struck Edmonton, Alberta in
Canada. Twenty seven people died in the F4, making it Canada's deadliest
twister ever.
