...The Heat Backs Off A Bit...

While many Alabama lawns remain parched and dry, some neighborhoods got a
good soaking in the scattered storms that formed yesterday afternoon. Some
rain totals included 2.05" at Helena, 1.59" at Inverness, 1.56" at
Trussville, 1.30" at Sterrett, 1.19" at Riverchase, and 1.03" at Greystone
Farms in northern Shelby County. There was even some temporary flooding in
parts of the Birmingham metro area.

MORE RAIN? With a tropical storm in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, you might
think more rain is ahead for the state. But, unfortunately the rain shield
from Alberto will stay well to the south and east of us, and as drier air
works into the state from the north, we don't expect any additional showers
today. In fact, the chance of rain here for the next five to seven days
looks very small due to warm air aloft.

ALBERTO UPDATE: The broad circulation center of tropical storm Alberto will
move across North Florida today; the main rain mass will remain east of
Panama City; the heaviest rain will fall in places like Jacksonville,
Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach. Flash flood watches remain in effect, but
the rain in Florida will be beneficial and generally welcome news. Alberto
will move into the Atlantic tonight, and continue to move northeast, just
off the eastern U.S. coast.

Peak winds with Alberto are near 70 mph, but the system is elongated and not
very healthy due to shearing and dry air becoming entrained into the
circulation. Weakening is likely today as the system moves over land.

HOW DRY? Counting the 0.15" that fell yesterday at the Birmingham Airport,
we have had measurable rain on only four of the last 26 days in the
Birmingham metro area.
