...Perfect Weather Warning...
I et there is a little second guessing going on about this Perfect
Weather Warning for this afternoon. Things like, "You know it's hard
to get all the ingredients to come together early in the season like
this for truly perfect weather;" or "I hate when he issues a PWW, it
dooms the day to be less than perfect;" or "Did he see those showers
on the GFS over North Alabama?";or "Perfect Weather my eye, did you
see how cloudy it was this morning." We Weather Humans are a thick
skinned lot, and you have to take the bad with the good!
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE TODAY: A Perfect Weather Warning means that
ideal weather conditions have been indicated on weather observations
or actually sighted by spotters. The possibilities include abundant
warm sunshine, temperatures in the 70s and a nice southerly breeze.
When a PWW is issued, you need to take action immediately. Stop what
you're doing, immediately head outdoors, and enjoy. Wear comfortable
clothing. And call your friends and neighbors in case they may not
have heard the warning.
REST OF WEEKEND: On the weather maps, we see an atmospheric tug of
war going on between the big subtropical high to the southeast of us
and a powerful upper trough over the Rockies. In the middle is a
snaky stationary front, which is where the battleground is setting
up. That stalled front in the center of the country is setting the
stage for potential severe weather this afternoon and evening from
north-eastern Oklahoma through much of Missouri and into Illinois and
western Indiana. Low pressure is expected to form over Southeast
Colorado. It will move out toward the Plains tonight. Large hail
will be the biggest threat, but a tornado or two is possible along the
southern edge of the threat area. The front will edge a little
closer to Alabama as the low passes, and this will bring an elevation
in rain chances on Sunday, mainly over Northwest Alabama.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Our rain chances will go up just a tad on Monday and
Tuesday with that persistent front just to our northwest. An ejecting
upper disturbance will give the front enough impetus to move into
Alabama on Wednesday, where it will likely stall just to the south of
Birmingham. As it does, this will keep us in rain chances through
much of Thursday and Friday, and perhaps well into the weekend. There
is tremendous uncertainty and inconsistency in the model presentations
for the weather beyond Wednesday, so take the forecast with a grain of
salt.
RECORD BIN: Record highs on Friday included 67F at Flint, MI; 69F at
Beckley, WV; 82F at Joplin, MO; 87F at Childress, TX tied the record
The high of 65F at Lansing, MI ties the record for the date as did the
67F at Detroit.
ON THIS DATE IN 1990: One of the worst ice storms in Iowa this
century left much of the state blanketed under a thick coating of
ice. As much as five inches of ice coated power lines in some areas.
The ice was heavy enough to bring down 78 foot high voltage
transmission line towers near Boone. 270,000 people without power.
Some rural areas were without electricity for a week. Damage was
estimated at $50 million.
