...Snow Day...

Snow in Alabama is a real treat. Especially when it happens on a
weekend. Thousands of Alabamians delighted in throwing open their
drapes this morning and seeing a dusting to 2 inches or more of snow
outside this morning. It was a perfect snow, with no power outages
and limited travel difficulties. This rare event was brought to us
courtesy of an upper low that is spinning its way across East Alabama
this afternoon. As it moves northeast, it will take the snow with it,
but not before dumping more snow on eastern sections of the area.
There was even some thundersnow over extreme East Alabama and western
Georgia.

TRAVEL PROBLEMS: If you have to be out and about this afternoon in
the areas that have received snow, take it easy. Snow has collected on
some roads, especially on bridges, and accidents have been reported in
many areas. If you don't have to be out, just stay home and enjoy
the picturesque scene. As temperatures drop well into the 20s
tonight, any leftover slush or water on roads will definitely freeze,
so be prepared to take your time if you will be driving Monday morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We dawn clear and cold on Monday, with those lows in
the lower and middle 20s. A few spots that have a decent snow cover
may well be in the teens. Monday promises to be sunny, but cold, with
highs struggling to get out of the 40s. Monday night will be very
frosty again, as cold air continues to flow into the state. Lows will
once again be well down into the 20s. Tuesday will still be on the
chilly side, with below average temperatures topping out in the lower
50s. Temperatures will begin to moderate by Wednesday, as a ridge of
high pressure in the upper atmosphere begins to build over Alabama and
a large surface ride sets up off the Florida coast. Look for 60s on
Wednesday, and then a run of 70s through the weekend. It should be
primarily dry through much of the week and weekend, although there is
a slight chance of a shower on Friday and Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: March roared in like a lion across South
Alabama and Georgia as 31 tornadoes caused 19 fatalities during the
afternoon and evening hours. There were a total of 13 strong to
violent (EF2 or greater) tornadoes and five killer tornadoes. The
event was well forecast, with a high risk outlook in place and good
advance PDS watches and warnings. Warning lead times on all tornadoes
averaged 16 minutes with an average 20 minute lead time on killer
tornadoes. A large negatively tilted trough and powerful upper wind
fields allowed for the development of the big tornadoes. In Coffee
County, Alabama, tornado warnings started before 11 a.m.. At 1:10
p.m. CST, an EF4 struck the city of Enterprise. School administrators
had students in designated shelters as part of their tornado plan.
Despite the preparations, a wall collapsed on a group of people,
killing eight students. The event prompted a debate as to whether
school should have let out early because of the pending threat.
Another EF4 tornado struck Miller's Ferry in Alabama killing one man.
In Georgia, an EF2 tornado destroyed a mobile home park near Newton,
killing 6. Two died in Americus, Georgia, when an EF3 tornado struck
during the evening.
