TOPSY-TURVY WEATHER: Bless our thermometers. They have had a real
workout lately running up and down their scale. There is some good
news in the forecast today. We are going to have a milder trend
starting tomorrow afternoon that will become even better as the week
goes on. So much so from Thursday all the way into next week we will
have high temperatures in the 70s. That is about 10 degrees warmer
than the average for this time of year. We have listed 73 for the high
Friday, but Saturday will be unseasonably warm with a high of around
77. The chance of rain is very slim for the next several days. In
fact, some of the precipitation projections show it dry all across the
Southern USA through Friday. About the earliest we can expect any
showers, and maybe a few storms, would be early next week.

DO WE NEED RAIN? Not really at the moment, because we had some great
totals during that severe weather event leading up to the Sunday snow.
We had one report of over 9 inches at Samantha in North Tuscaloosa
County and numerous reports over 5 inches. This heavy rain caused the
2009 deficiency at Birmingham Airport to jump to a surplus of 1.66
inches as of today.

THE SEMI SNOWSTORM: It did not really qualify for a snowstorm,
although based on our standards we might call it that. We will try to
post a roundup of snow amounts from that storm on the BLOG later today
or tonight. Generally, most amounts across Central Alabama were around
2 inches. There were reports of over 5 inches in Hueytown and some of
the area in East/Central Alabama, like Sylacauga, had 3 to 5 inches.
It was a semi-historic event with all the local weather people doing
without sleep over 24 hours in a row. I suppose most of us are still
semi-groggy today. But all the kiddies are not groggy and that is what
counts. I was talking to a lady at my local bank this morning and she
said her youngsters simply demanded snow ice cream. She admitted that
she liked it too, because her mother made it for her and her
grandmother made it for her mother. Traditions are hard to break. I
stocked up on Buffalo Rock (diet version) and some Vienna sausage to
get me through the long hours. The Wall Street Journal reported in a
story in their front section this morning that 210 churches in Central
Alabama cancelled their Sunday morning services because of the snow.
There was a similar story in USA Today. I heard some folks on a
nationwide radio program this morning tossing a bit of fun at us
because we are in the middle of the Bible Belt. That is okay. We are
not thin-skinned.

AFTER THE STORM LEFT ALABAMA: A real booger of a storm as it advanced
up the east coast. However, the center was moving further off shore
this afternoon and the snow was ending in the Big Apple. A massive
shut down of Interstate 85 between Greenville, Spartanburg and
Charlotte. Literally hundreds of cars were stalled all night. Some
ran out of gas and could not get off to find a place to eat.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is going through some
confusing times. We had to put her little bathroom bell out of reach,
because
little Brandon (our great grandson) was treating it like a golf ball.
But Miss Molly is smart as a whip. She now goes to the back door,
looks straight up at the bell, which is at doorknob height, and turns
around and glares at us. It is all the signal she needs. Last night
she took the situation in her own hands (er, paws) and had a one
inning ballgame by herself that was the most vigorous I have seen. She
had very little room in the living area to play ball, so she would
grab one and run in circles of a few feet and bounce off the back of
the couch to go for more. Life goes on.
