...Moist Air Spreading Northward...
FLIRTING WITH 90 TOMORROW: A short line of thunderstorms developed
over West/Central Alabama this morning and moved northward. A couple
of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued, but there were no
confirmed reports of damage or hail. 33/40 skywatchers reported ½ inch
of rain in only 15 minutes at Millport in extreme South Lamar County
and 0.36 at Reform in North Pickens County. This afternoon, that
little band of showers and storms was still moving slowly northward.
Not only is the humidity going up, but the temperature as
well. Some communities tomorrow will reach the 90-degree mark,
especially over on the west side of the state in places like
Tuscaloosa. For some reason, 90 sounds quite a bit hotter than 89
psychologically. Maybe that is just me.
We do not see any big widespread rain events all the way
into the middle of next week. There will be some widely spaced storms
each day through Saturday. Your chance of getting wet is only about 1
in 5. During the day Saturday, a cool front of sorts will push
southward into our area. This will give us lower humidity on Sunday
and Monday will also be mostly sunshine. About the only break we will
get on the thermometer, is a low temperature of about 64 Sunday
morning and maybe 58 or 60 in some of the cooler valleys.
TROPICAL FORECAST: The National Weather Service issued
their seasonal tropical storm and hurricane forecast today. It covers
the Atlantic Basin, which means not only the Atlantic Ocean, but the
Caribbean and our good friend, the Gulf of Mexico. They are calling
for 12 to 16 named storms with 6 to 9 of those reaching hurricane
force and 2 to 5 becoming major hurricanes. This is about 65% above
average for the number of storms. The long-term average is closer to
11. Earlier, Dr. William Gray and his staff of researchers at Colorado
State University called for 15 named storms, including 8 hurricanes
and 4 major ones. The big unanswerable question at the moment is how
many of these will strike the USA coastline. We will have to play out
the season to really know that.
FINAL NOTES: This afternoon a storm spotter discovered a
huge tornado on the ground north of Denver. It continued northward
toward Ft. Collins. It overturned large trucks on the interstate and
for a time it was closed. There were also some earlier reports of some
injuries between Denver and Ft. Collins. The middle part of the
country is going to be where a lot of storm chasers hang out for the
next several days…a huge out-of-control wildfire near the Silicon
Valley in California moving toward hundreds of homes in some of the
canyons…20 was the low in Nuiqsut, Alaska this morning and 27 at
Redmond, Oregon and Grand Canyon Village.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Something else my little pal, Little
Miss Molly, absolutely loves is a rubdown and to gently scratch her
back and her head. It is almost like giving her a half-dozen sleeping
pills. She cannot stay awake. During all of that, she will look us
right in the eye, with her eyes barely open, as if she is trying to
say that she deeply appreciates the treatment. She has got to know
that she is as loved as any dog in the world. Life goes on.
