...Santa Claus Is Coming To Town...

We are getting off to a beautiful start on this Christmas Eve across
Central Alabama with seasonably cold conditions and crystal clear
skies this morning. Temperatures are generally in the middle and
upper 20s. A southwesterly flow aloft will spread some high clouds
across the area during the day. Meanwhile, an upper disturbance will
swing out of West Texas heading our way. This disturbance should be
weakening and will dive further south than we expected. This should
keep it from causing any problems for us. So Santa should have very
few problems as he makes his way into Alabama late tonight. I am sure
the flight planners at the North Pole will be checking the terminal
forecasts for our area for tonight. It looks like a few broken clouds
thinning after midnight. Visibility should be about 7 miles, with no
restrictions. That's good news for good little boys and girls.

CHRISTMAS DAY FORECAST: Indications are now that the disturbance will
be well east of us by tomorrow, leading to mostly sunny skies and
seasonable temperatures. After a light morning freeze, temperatures
will warm to near 60 during the afternoon, giving those good little
boys and girls a chance to play with all their new toys. And to get
outside, giving moms and dads a break.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: We should be in between disturbances on
Wednesday with partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Still
expecting an active weekend ahead. An approaching disturbance will
spread clouds back into the area on Thursday with showers possible
during the day. Rain should increase Thursday night. Friday will
feature rain and a chance of thunderstorms. Things will remain
unsettled into Saturday with showers still likely. There are signs
that a bigger wet weather system will move here here late Saturday
night into Sunday. Hopefully, we will see some good rainfall amounts.

SKY TREAT TONIGHT: Step outside this evening and you will be greeted
by a breathtaking sight. The brightest nearly full moon that you may
ever see will be accompanied by a bright orange Mars in the eastern
sky. The moon is riding higher tonight than it will at any point
until 2023, making it seem especially bright, lighting the Christmas
Eve sky with its light. Nearby, the red planet will be at opposition
to the sun, or directly opposite it. It will also be at its closest
to the Earth that it will be in the next nine years. This will make
it seem especially bright also. And being opposite the sun, it will
be visible all night long. So get out this evening and enjoy the sky
show. You might also hear the sound of bells. If you do, scan the
skies for a jolly fatman and eight tiny reindeer. He will be battling
MVRF conditions
and showers by late tonight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Coldest Christmas Eve on record. Over 125
cities recorded record lows for the date, including 17 cities that
established all-time record lows for the month of December. Chicago
recorded its' coldest ever with a reading of 25 degrees below zero and
Havre MT recorded their all-time low with 50 degrees below zero. The
all-time U.S. record high barometric pressure is recorded with 31.42
inches of mercury at Miles City MT.
