...Merry Christmas!...

Fine weather conditions across Central Alabama on this
Christmas morning with mostly clear skies and seasonably chilly
readings around freezing. Santa was guided by one of the most
brilliant full moons in recent memory last night, making his rounds
with little in the way of weather to bother him.

OUR FORECAST: A disturbance is passing through Alabama
today, but it has little to work with in the way of moisture. As it
enters Georgia, it will start to pick up some Atlantic moisture, and
there could be a few light showers in the Peach State. I guess there
could be a sprinkle back into Alabama, but the chances are small.
Everyone has been pulling for at least a few snowflakes for an Alabama
version of White Christmas, but no such luck. With a mix of sun and
clouds today, temperatures will warm into the upper 50s to near 60.
With clear skies and calm conditions tonight, temperatures will settle
to near freezing again. Tomorrow looks a lot like today, with partly
cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 60s.

BATTLEGROUND STATE: Changes will come starting tomorrow
night as a disturbance rotates our way. This will increase our clouds
late this afternoon, with showers reappearing on a radar near you
tomorrow night. Showers will be in the forecast for much of the day
on Thursday. Meanwhile, high pressure off the southeastern U.S.
coast will remain stubbornly in place as the disturbance passes by to
our north. Alabama will remain in the battle zone between the high
and the trough to the northwest. A nice round of rain and storms
should occur on Friday, with another on Saturday night, and a final
one on New Years Eve. Actual timing may vary.

CRITCAL FIRE CONDITIONS FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: High
pressure setting up over the southwestern states will produce
dangerous fire weather conditions today as winds of 30-40 mph blow
from the northeast to the south of the Coastal Range. Santa Ana winds
will accelerate through favored passes, with gusts to 70 mph today.
The only thing keeping the outlook from becoming extreme today will be
recent rains from a cold front.

GULF COAST WHITE CHRISTMAS: Back on December 25, 2004,
a vigorous low pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico traveled along
a path that was perfect for producing snowfall along the coast and
just inland. The snow began on the evening of the 24th, and by
Christmas morning, residents were enjoying a traditional White
Christmas. Galveston and Port Aransas, which are directly on the Gulf
of Mexico picked up three and four inches of snow respectively.
Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas, picked up 1.5 inches, their
first measurable snow since 1895. The snowfall of 4.4 inches at Corpus
Christi established a new record for a single storm in the Texas
coastal city. Nearby Victoria, Texas picked up 13 inches of snow,
their first White Christmas in eighty six years. New Orleans received
one half inch of snow on Christmas Day. It marked the only time since
weather records began there in 1852 that the Crescent City enjoyed a
White Christmas. Measurable snow has only been observed fifteen times
in New Orleans. It was the last measurable snow since 1989, when ½
inch fell on December 22, but melted before Christmas Day.
