...A Very Muggy Airmass Hangs Over Alabama...

A blanket of very moist, muggy air hangs over Alabama this morning,
and promises to aid in the process of more showers and thunderstorms
forming across the state. While a morning shower is possible, the most
numerous ones will come during the afternoon and evening hours. Like
yesterday, some neighborhoods could see over one inch of rain from the
stronger storms with plenty of dangerous cloud to ground lightning and
gusty winds.

MUGGY DAYS: We really don't see much of an airmass change all the way
through Friday, so we will have some chance of showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis. We figure the best coverage of them
will come today, and then again on Thursday, when a surface front will
move down to near the Alabama/Tennessee line and become stationary.
Most Alabama communities have a great chance of seeing one to two
inches of rain between today and Friday. Because of the clouds and
showers, temperatures should generally be a little below normal for
mid summer during the next several days. I doubt if anyone will
complain about that.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Another front will approach from the north on
Saturday, so we will maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms
as the weekend begins. The GFS (our primary medium range computer
model) is trying to bring some drier air down here from the north on
Sunday and Monday, but cold fronts have a very hard pressing into
Alabama in mid-July. So, for now will still mention a chance of a few
scattered storms on Sunday, but they could be more numerous south of
Birmingham.

TOPIC: TROPICS: While the Atlantic basin, a tropical depression has
formed in the eastern Pacific, well off the western coast of Mexico.
Tropical Depression 4-E is near latitude 17.5 N, 120.0 W, and will
move steadily to the west/northwest through the open water of the
Pacific Ocean. Significant strengthening is not expected at this time.

MONDAY'S RAIN: Once again, some parts of Alabama received some very
beneficial rain yesterday. Totals included 1.76" at Ashville, 1.59" at
Childersburg, 1.58" at our Demopolis SKYCAM location (atop the Civic
Center on the east bank of the Tombigee River), 1.18" at Smith Dam
(northeast of Jasper), 1.10" at Moundville, 1.07" at Jemison, .97" at
Fayette, and .84" at Steele. Thunderstorm winds were responsible for
some structural damage near Holly Pond in Cullman County.

A HOT SUMMER DAY: Sizzling heat was the big story for parts of the
Northeast U.S... highs yesterday included 98 at Washington, D.C., 96
at Philadelphia, 94 at Chicago, and 92 in New York City. The hottest
spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 121 degrees.
The high in Phoenix was 106, while Las Vegas reached 110.
