A MAJOR COOL DOWN LOOMS: A lot going on today, so we will try to be
scarce with words. Our first concern is some showers and
thunderstorms tonight. A few of those could be strong to severe. The
Storm Prediction Center has nearly the NW half of the state as far
south as Birmingham under a Slight Risk for tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch
for part of North Alabama from about Birmingham northward until 9:00
o'clock tonight. It includes the greater Birmingham area.

We must tell you about a high pressure area now centered over
Southern Canada where the pressure has built up to 1053 MB.
Translation: a lot of wintertime highs are not that strong. This is a
major push of colder air and it will bring Central Alabama some
temperatures in the low and mid 30s over the Easter weekend.

First we must deal with thunderstorms tonight. The main cold front
marking the leading edge of the colder air was over SE Missouri and
moving steadily toward the SE. The front will reach Central Alabama
before daybreak. Showers will end tomorrow morning and NW winds will
reach 12 to 25 mph tomorrow ushering in the colder air.

SNOW AND TORNADOES: Two major anniversaries for Alabama today. The
big super outbreak on April 3, 1974 when North Alabama was
devastated. Also on this date in 1987, a surprise heavy wet snow
caused lots of tree damage in the area. The Birmingham area received
5 to 7 inches of snow. The trees were completely green and azaleas
and dogwoods were in full blossom. It created an eerie sight.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center is having another
busy day. A Moderate Risk is posted for much of Arkansas, West
Tennessee, West and Central Kentucky northward into Missouri,
Illinois and Indiana. A Slight Risk extends all the way from NE Texas
to Cleveland and Detroit. An intense line of thunderstorms was moving
southward through Missouri, Southern Illinois and Ohio.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Yesterday I mentioned that I did not
let Little Miss Molly interfere with my weather duties. Just wanted
to assure the readers of that. I did not mean that I would stop the
Molly adventures. A great outpouring of Molly fan mail. We received
close to 70 e-mails and we appreciate every one. Every single one
urged a continuation. The three most energetic creatures I know of
are Little Miss Molly, the Energizer Bunny and Dennis Altizer and not
necessarily in that order. Dennis is our Music Minister at Huffman
Baptist Church. Little Miss Molly dragged me around the walking track
this morning so fast that my hips were hurting. However, I do not
mind. I only got to watch the last 17 minutes of the basketball game
last night and Molly pouted all the way through that because I would
not play ball. Life goes on—tedious at times....
