A POSSIBLE DAMAGING FREEZE: Several weather problems exist for
Alabama. Here is a quick abstract look. First, the state is very dry.
By tomorrow afternoon, the dew point may fall as low as the single
digits with brisk north winds. This means extreme caution for
woodland fires. Second, weekend freeze may be damaging. Third, some
strong thunderstorms by midweek. Some of those could be severe.

The most immediate concern is the very cold temperatures we are
expecting all the way through the weekend. Indeed, there is a chance
that we may record the lowest temperatures ever in the month of
April. Reliable records go back as far as the 1880s. It has been
mostly sunny across the state today with brisk north winds. There is
quite a bit of cloudiness to the west and NW of Alabama. Some of that
will be over the area overnight. Despite that, we expect low
temperatures to be in the mid and upper 20s, generally around 26
across Central Alabama. Cold air will continue to flow into the state
from the NW Saturday, with winds over 20 mph at times. Our projected
high of 49 will feel a lot colder than that. It will not be a good
day for a fire to break out in the woodlands.

It now appears that Sunday morning will be our coldest. We are using
24 for a low. A lot of that will depend on your location and how much
wind you have. In the protected areas such as the valleys, that 24
looks good. On the ridges, the low may be more like 28 or 29.
Finally, a milder trend will start Monday and by Tuesday afternoon,
temperatures will warm well into the 60s—maybe the upper 60s.

Look for some scattered showers to arrive Tuesday night along with
the chance of some thunderstorms. The better chance of those will be
later Tuesday night and extending into Wednesday. Outside chance that
a few of those could be severe on Wednesday.

THE DANGER OF OUR WEEKEND FREEZE: Obvious that you should protect
all your tender vegetation. Jason Simpson interviewed Mayor Tom
Bentley from Thorsby this morning and here are a few notes from that
interview: The winter and spring season were perfect this year for
peaches and Chilton County growers were expecting the best crop in
years. Now it looks as if the crop could be a total loss. If it is
just 30 degrees for a short time, the entire crop could be severely
damaged.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 1
above zero at several places in Northern Minnesota. The area around
Central and Eastern Canada, especially the huge Hudson Bay area, has
had a winter to remember. Makes me wonder how deep Hudson Bay is
frozen. My guess is that all those polar bears that call Churchill,
Manitoba home would like to catch a fast train south. That bitter
cold has been pushing down into the USA at intervals and we know what
kind of winter the NE part of the country has had.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The sky was so crisp and clear. A
distinct chill in the brisk north wind and the bright sun reflecting
off Little Miss Molly and her hair blown around by the wind, made for
a great walk. The Old Crow Motel stood out sharp and clear back-
lighted by the early sun. It is the tallest tree in the community. It
has to be older than Legion Field and me. It cannot be around many
more years, but it stands tall near a wide grassy open area. Molly
especially likes that, because she can run and play through the
grass. Often hard to turn her around. Life goes on.....
