HOW DRY WE ARE: Most communities in the state went through the 19th day in
a row without rain today. Actually, a little bit of rain showed up on radar
in parts of South Alabama, but it had no chance of reaching the ground
because of the very dry air. What are our chances? Very little until this
weekend. We expect mostly sunny dry weather to continue for the next couple
of days. We should have a slight chance of rain by late Saturday and a
slightly improving chance Saturday night. However, our best chance of rain
will come on Sunday and Monday as a low pressure system over the north Gulf
of Mexico moves eastward offshore south of the Alabama-NW Florida coast. We
think most of this rain will be over the south half of the state.
Temperatures will be those that you cannot conscientiously complain about.
(See our day-by-day forecast.)

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave was moving westward over the SW Gulf of
Mexico this afternoon producing showers and thunderstorms. The National
Hurricane Center does not expect this to form into a tropical depression or
a tropical storm.

FAMOUS HURRICANE PARTY-A MYTH?: We have all heard of a legendary hurricane
party during powerful Hurricane Camille at the Richelieu Apartments in Pass
Christian, Mississippi. However, a few years ago, the Biloxi-Gulfport Sun
Herald published a series of interviews with a few who actually survived
that night. They denied a hurricane party. Instead, they were all getting
together to keep each other company and ride out the storm because they did
not believe it would be that bad. We appreciate Ken Harness, one of our
regular readers, for furnishing this information. Ken had first-hand
knowledge of Camille. He grew up in Biloxi and lived through that terrible
night-one that he will never forget. He said one of the more frightening
things were people tying themselves to trees while clinging to the top of
their houses so that they would not be swept away and how one of the
survivors of the apartments floated out of the building on a mattress while
it was disintegrating around her.

PROWLING IN ALL DIRECTIONS: A very cold 19 degrees this morning at
Cadillac, Mich., 14 at Yukon, Alaska and 2 below zero at Isachen in Northern
Canada...on Wolf Creek Pass in SW Colorado, it was snowing this morning
along with thunder and lightning...the first widespread frost of the season
for Eastern Kentucky tonight...three inches of rain at Waco.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure seemed like old times with Little Miss
Molly as we took our early morning walk today-my first time to walk her in
four days. When she wakes up each morning, she moans and stretches and
immediately makes her inspection tour...checking and sniffing every room in
the house with her tail wagging constantly. Then, whammo, she pounds the
miniature bell hanging from the back door knob insisting it is time to
go...and go now! If I don't respond right away, she finds me and plops as
flat on the floor as possible and walls her eyes up at me. That means even
greater urgency...so I tied my shoes in record time and away we went. The
sunrise was spectacular with scattered middle clouds and thin cirrus
clouds...but Molly was in her NASCAR mode which means I was going as fast as
my little legs would carry me with no time to warm up...a long play session
when we returned. Life goes on sometimes at break neck speed. We enjoy it
all.
