...Nice Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It's a nice start out there on this early October morning
with refreshing temperatures and clear skies. Much of the coming week
promises to be nice, thanks to high pressure that will be holding sway
across the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Today will be a beautiful day again, with lots of sunshine
and temperatures that will warm well into the 80s thanks to lots of dry air.
A reinforcing shot of slightly cooler, and dry air is heading towards the
state and will arrive later today. This front will help to keep our
temperatures near normal for the remainder of the week. Tuesday through
Thursday should see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, but conditions will
be dry. Clouds may be on the increase by Friday as a tropical system over
the Gulf of Mexico organizes and moves toward the Louisiana coast. Strong
high pressure to the east of Alabama will block the feature's progress and
shunt it just to our west. This could spread copious amounts of moisture
into Alabama and the South starting on Saturday. We have been worried that
this system might take on tropical characteristics, and there is a chance
that it might, but for now it appears that it may be a regular old low
pressure system, albeit a wet one. Our weekend forecast will depend heavily
on the future track of this system. For now, we will call for increasing
rain chances by Friday night, lasting until Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Residents along the Gulf Coast awakened to the
disturbing news that Hurricane Opal had intensified overnight from a
category two hurricane to a monster category 4 storm with top winds of 150
mph. Evacuations were frantic during the morning hours, and massive traffic
jams ensued. Fortunately, Opal weakened back to category two status before
making landfall on the Florida Panhandle later that afternoon. Still, Opal
brought a devastating fifteen foot storm surge and 115 mph winds to the
beautiful beaches of Northwest Florida. Opal produced damaging winds well
into North Alabama, causing a massive power outage that would be the state
record, until Ivan came.
