...Windy and Wet Weather Ahead...

Get ready for a windy and wet period in Alabama weather as a strong low pressure systems wades ashore from the Gulf of Mexico. The low should track north northeastward across state overnight tonight, spreading wind and rain.

SOGGY SATURDAY: Clouds greets the day across Central Alabama on this mid-January Saturday. Temperatures are mainly in the 40s across the I-20 corridor. Areas that were in the 30s last night have generally risen into the 40s even over northern sections. A few showers will be possible this morning before the main rain area moves into the area this afternoon. Rain will be likely through the evening hours as the low pushes inland. It will also become quite windy.

HOMETOWN CELEBRATION: Lots of folks heading to Tuscaloosa for the National Championship Celebration at Bryant Denny Stadium today. We will be watching the radar, hoping the rain holds off until after the 2 p.m. event. But as you're heading out, take the rain gear.

WE COULD USE THE RAIN: Haven't heard that in a while. Rain from this system should average 1.25 inches in the I-20 corridor. The rain should taper off tonight, but a few showers may linger through Sunday morning. Skies will clear Sunday afternoon.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: The airmass behind this system will not be a cold one, so some fairly pleasant January weather will set in for the Dr. King Holiday Monday. Highs on Monday will be in the 60s, after a start in the 30s.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday looks pleasant as well, a lot like Monday. Another system will bring rain back to the state by Wednesday night. Rain will continue on Thursday, but amounts are not expected to be heavy. Friday should feature clearing skies with seasonable temperatures: highs in the 50s, and lows in the 30s.

WEEKEND STORM: We will be watching for the development of a very powerful low over the weekend that could spread rain and heavy thunderstorms into Alabama by late Saturday night.

WEATHERBRAINS: What do you think is the deadliest weather phenomenon? Tornadoes? Hurricanes? Lightning? Flash flooding? Our Guest WeatherBrain this week says that another weather hazard kills more people than all of those others combined. What is it? Icy roads. Storm chaser and photographer Dan Robinson believes that more can be done to warn drivers. The panel will get a lot better looking this week, as Corey Anne Walton from the National Hurricane Center joins the group. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Until 1990, no tornado had ever been recorded in the United States on January 16th. Once the "jinx" was broken, tornadoes occurred on January 16th in 1993 and 1997 in Florida. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
