...The Warming Trend Continues...

WARMER DAYS: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was 50 degrees, making it the warmest day so far in 2010. The good news is that our warming trend continues; we are forecasting a high in the mid 50s today, and close to 60 degrees tomorrow. Both days will remain dry, although high clouds will streak across the sky at times.

WET WEEKEND: The high clouds we see today and tomorrow are coming from a developing storm system over the western Gulf of Mexico. This will spread rain into Alabama on Saturday, and it has the potential to bring a pretty good soaking to much of the state. Rain totals of over two inches are possible over the southern counties, with a good chance of 1 to 2 inches along the I-20 corridor (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston). The rain will become widespread by Saturday afternoon, and will continue into Saturday night before ending early Sunday morning. This rain will greatly reduce our rain deficit for 2010, which is now about two and a quarter inches.

While the rain will end early Sunday, the clouds will linger for most of the day. Temperatures Sunday will be a little cooler, with a high in the 48 to 51 degree range. No Arctic air involved in this system, and for now we don't expect any seriously cold weather for the next 10 to 15 days. We do note that very cold air is building over Alaska again, where some spots have been colder than 50 below zero over the past few days. We might have to deal with that air as February begins.

NEXT WEEK: We will forecast dry and pleasant weather Monday and Tuesday, but another wet weather system due in here around Wednesday night and Thursday. Looks like this will bring the potential for another good statewide soaking, and there could even be a few thunderstorms involved as a little surface based instability could show up by then.

JANUARY 1940: We has just experienced the coldest beginning of a calendar year in Alabama since January 1940, when the weather was brutally cold. The average low for all 31 days of January, 1940 was 21. A low of -10 was registered at Birmingham Airport. However, at that time the Airport Station was not official. From the Jasper Daily Mountain Eagle: "Snow has been on the ground ten days. Streams are frozen over. Schools are closed. The big snow that visited Jasper and Walker County 10 days ago is still with us. At first the snow measured 14 to 17 inches. The temperature has been below zero for several mornings. Town Creek has been frozen over about a week. People are skating on the river at Cordova, Linn's Park. Lost Creek and Blackwater. Traffic lights have been turned off because there was not enough traffic to justify them."

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Imperial, California with 77 degrees. Coldest was Eagle, Alaska with 53 degrees below zero. Coldest in the "lower 48" was Whitefield, New Hampshire with 14 below.
