...Warmer Days Ahead...

THAWING OUT: After another significant freeze this morning, a nice warming trend cranks up this afternoon as we head toward the 50 degree mark. The warming trend continues through the rest of the week, with mid 50s tomorrow, and upper 50s on Friday. Some communities in West Alabama have a good chance of reaching the 60 degree mark Friday afternoon for the first time in 2010. Our weather will remain dry through Friday, although scattered clouds will begin to show up tomorrow and Friday.

WET WEATHER RETURNS SATURDAY: A rather robust storm system is forecast to develop over the western Gulf of Mexico Friday, and that promises to bring rain to Alabama just as the weekend gets underway. We will forecast periods of rain Saturday into Saturday night, with potential for around 1/2 to 1 inch of rain for the North-Central part of the state. The heaviest rain should be over the southern counties of Alabama, where some thunderstorms could be involved as well. Rain totals of over two inches are possible for some South Alabama communities. Then, drier air begins to return Sunday when morning clouds should give way to a partly sunny sky. No cold air involved with the weekend system, so even on Sunday the high should be close to 50 degrees.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We stay dry for the first half of next week, but another rain producing system is due in here toward the end of the week. Temperatures should remain near seasonal averages, with highs mostly in the 50s. No sign of another bitterly cold Arctic blast through the end of January, although there are hints the gates to the Yukon could open up around the first of February. We have to wonder if February will make us shiver…

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: We note extremely cold air is building in Alaska again; the coldest spot yesterday morning was Eagle, AK with a bone chilling 55 degrees below zero. Coldest spot in the continental U.S. yesterday was Kremmling, Colorado with 20 below. Warmest spot in the nation yesterday was Rialto, California with 78.

STORM ALERT 2010: Our annual weather tour across Alabama will begin in a couple of weeks. We will announce the complete schedule and dates in a few days, but it is confirmed this year we will be taking the show to Hale County for the first time (that show will be at Hale County High School in Moundville), along with other stops in the Winfield, Gadsden, the Dora/Sumiton area. We will also be doing a special daytime Storm Alert 2010 show in the Birmingham area, we will also explain that one in coming days. We started the tour in 1997, right after ABC 33/40 signed on the air, in an effect to get Alabamians ready for the spring tornado season. There is absolutely no admission charge, and we always encourage you to get to the site early to get a good seat. The nighttime shows will begin at 7:00 p.m., and we will have more details in coming days. Stay tuned...
