...A Little Colder Today...

ONE DAY SETBACK FOR THE WARM-UP: Many people told me yesterday that those afternoon temperatures in the 40s felt like a tropical heat wave compared to the recent days of the Arctic chill. Birmingham's official high was 45 degrees, making it a tie for the warmest day of 2010 (the last time it was that warm was on January 1 when the high was also 45). We begin this day with some clouds over the northern half of the state, and some of you might even see few snow flurries driving to work, especially north and east of Birmingham, as a strong disturbance aloft moves overhead. The moisture is razor thin, so no significant precipitation is expected. And, sunshine returns in full force this afternoon as the disturbance moves away. Temperatures will be a little colder today; we figure most places will see a high somewhere between 36 and 41 degrees, still well below the average high of 52.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tonight will be cold again; we expect most communities to be in the low 20s by daybreak tomorrow. It should be our 12th consecutive morning with a low of 25 or colder, extending the record, which was broken this morning (the old record was 10 consecutive days with a low at or below 25). The good news is that a pronounced warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon, and will last for the rest of the week. We are forecasting a high in the upper 40s tomorrow, followed by low 50s on Thursday, and mid 50s on Friday. Some West Alabama communities have a chance of reaching the 60 degree mark for the first time this year Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A rather robust storm system is forecast to develop in the western Gulf of Mexico late in the week, and that promises to bring rain to much of Alabama as the weekend begins. We expect periods of rain Saturday, with amounts up this way in the 1/2 to 1 inch range. The heavier totals should be over South Alabama, where some spots could approach 2 inches. The rain will diminish late Saturday night and early Sunday, and the sky should begin to clear Sunday afternoon. There is no cold air involved in this system, so while we will be a little cooler early next week, we don't expect any Arctic air this time. The first half of next week looks dry.

PROBLEMS TO THE WEST: Gov. Haley Barbour yesterday declared a state of emergency in the city of Jackson because numerous water line breaks shut down water service, forcing closing of schools and businesses. State offices in Jackson closed at noon.

FLORIDA IS SHIVERING: Major damage has been reported to the Florida citrus crop due to the severe cold. Miami's low was 36 degrees yesterday morning, beating an 82-year-old record of 37 degrees. It dipped to 42 degrees in Key West, one degree off the record and the second-coldest reading since 1873. It was 14 degrees yesterday morning in Tallahassee, breaking the record of 15 set in 1982. Record-tying lows of 29 were observed in Orlando, and Tampa's 25-degree weather beat its old record of 27. Highs in South Florida are usually in the upper 60s in early January.
