...More Cold In Store...

It's beginning to sound like a broken record. Another day, another hard freeze across Central Alabama. Temperatures are in the teens again across much of the area. Fortunately, we may be past the hard freezes now, but it is still going to be very cold for at least the next 48 hours. Lows for the next three nights will still be below 25F, which will bring the number of consecutive days with sub 25F degrees to thirteen, setting a new record that has stood since 1940.

FIRE WEATHER WARNING TODAY: Highs today will be in the middle 40s with low humidities in the 25% range. This will set the stage for wildfire potential across Central Alabama today. Fires can grow quickly out of control. Refrain from burning and carefully monitor fire sources while the red flag warning is in effect.

WHEN WILL IT WARM UP? Over the next few days. We will suffer a temporary setback in the short term as a dry cold front moves through overnight tonight. Highs tomorrow will be in the lower to middle 40s after a low near 20 degrees. We will start out very cold again on Wednesday, with lows again near 20F, but highs by afternoon should at least make 50F. Thursday will be the warmest day we have seen since Christmas Day, when it was 57F at the Birmingham Airport.

WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM: Friday will start out mostly sunny, with increasing clouds by evening. By Friday morning, we will be watching a powerful storm system forming over the western Gulf of Mexico. The low will give us increasing winds late Friday night, with rain moving into the area after midnight. It will be rainy and windy on Saturday with winds averaging 15-25 mph with higher gusts. Rainfall could be heavy, with an inch or more.

POLL QUESTION: Weather forecasting by nature involves a certain amount of uncertainty. Understanding how to better convey that uncertainty can make for better forecasts. We will be talking about that on a future episode of WeatherBrains. Please help us by answering a poll question. Takes 30 seconds and no obligation. http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/2498752/

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is about to enter its fifth year of netcasting. This year promises to be our biggest year ever, with a great lineup of guests. Keep up with the goings on behind the scenes by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: A huge arctic outbreak invaded the South. Thirty-four stations across the eastern United States recorded record lows for the date, including: -5F at Atlanta and -2F at Birmingham. The Birmingham reading was 5 degrees colder than the previous record. Pensacola fell to 8F and Orlando recorded 32F. Mobile fell to 8F. Augusta fell to -2F, their all-time record low reading. The -26F recorded at Chicago was the coldest there since 1870. The wind chill at Beulah, ND was reported to be -109F! Of course, that was the old wind chill scale. The extreme cold caused tremendous damage to Florida's citrus crop, sending futures prices rising sharply. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.
