...Another Hard Freeze This Morning...

Most of North and Central Alabama experienced another hard freeze this morning. Temperatures bottomed out in the middle teens on average. Temperatures today will still be 15-20 degrees below normal, as afternoon readings top out in the middle and upper 30s. Lows tonight will once again drop to near 15 degrees.

RECORD SETTING COLD? The protracted cold is now in its tenth day. Birmingham has experienced ten consecutive days with lows of 25F or lower. The record is eleven. If the forecast goes according to plan, we will experience two more. The interesting thing is that we haven't established any new daily record lows during the cold spell. It is protracted nature that has made it especially problematic.

NEW WORK WEEK: Monday will still be on the cold side, with highs only making the middle and upper 40s. It's back down to near 20F on average Monday night. The warm up will be stymied a bit on Tuesday as a passing disturbance ships us one last reinforcing shot of cold air. This will roll daytime highs back a couple of degrees, with highs in the lower and middle 40s. By Wednesday, it will feel absolutely balmy in Birmingham, with highs back in the 50s, about where Miami was on Saturday. Thursday and Friday will feature highs in the 50s and lows around freezing.

WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM: A strong storm system is forecast to develop over the western Gulf state by Friday. As it moves northeast, it will spread rain back into Alabama on Saturday. Clouds will actually increase by late in the day on Friday. The good news is: temperatures will be warm enough for just rain across the Deep South. We have been dry lately, so the rain will actually be welcome. And there could be a couple of more rain events before the 26th.

WEATHERBRAINS: And the Banker never wears a mac, in the pouring rain, very strange. Penny Lane is my ears and in my eyes … Do you know what a mac is? If you listen to episode 206 of WeatherBrains, you will. Guest WeatherBrain Hannah Bayman of the BBC explained the lyric from the Beatles famous song. And Brian Peters completed the story with a fascinating WeatherBrains 101. This week's show will feature Author David Laskin. He has written several excellent books about weather. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Birmingham and much of Alabama was in the deep freeze as an Arctic blast was engulfing much of the eastern half of the nation. As temperatures were tumbling across Alabama, a surprise dropped from the sky on a Birmingham, AL highway. As temperatures fell steadily during the day through the twenties and teens into the single digits, a single engine Cessna had to execute an emergency landing on U.S. highway 31 in Fultondale. The plane's engine failed because of carburetor ice. Several tractor trailer trucks had to brake suddenly to avoid the plane. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
