...The Holiday Weekend...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is early September and already there are
footballs flying through the air and the usual upsurge in excitement
to start a new season. The weather is cooperating fairly good and we
still do not foresee any 90-plus heat even through almost all of next
week. Instead, look for highs mostly in the mid 80s. Lows at night
will be between 62 and 66. The chance of rain looks very, very small
through Saturday. We cannot absolutely, totally, 100% guarantee that,
but we left it out of the forecast. There will be a change coming up
late in the weekend and early next week. We may see some isolated
showers by Sunday afternoon and maybe a shower or thunderstorm Sunday
night.

LABOR DAY WEATHER: Looks mostly cloudy with a good chance of showers
and maybe some thunderstorms. The high temperature should back off to
the lower 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight and Friday night,
the weather looks good with temperatures at kick off around 80 and
dropping into the 70s during the game. Little or no chance of a
shower. Rice will be in Birmingham to play UAB Saturday with a 3:00
p.m. kick off. The temperature should be near 85 and about 80 when it
is time to go home.

NOT SO COOL A SUMMER: We became accustomed to a lot of hot weather
during our drought mainly two years ago and we all got the impression
that we have just experienced a cool 2009 summer. Not so fast,
cautions forecaster Gary Goggins with the National Weather Service. In
a story by staff writer Jeremy Grey in The Birmingham News this
morning, Gary reported that this summer was only the 48th coolest in
the past 114 years.

TUSCALOOSA: Speaking of August 2007, it was blistering hot for sure.
At Tuscaloosa Airport an amazing 27 of the 31 days had highs 95 or
greater and on 15 days the old thermometer exceeded 100, including 11
days in a row. It was above 105 degrees on 6 days topping out with 107
on August 10. It was pretty much the same story over the rest of
Central Alabama.

NORTH POLE, ALASKA: Mike and Kristie Calvin moved from Alabama to
Alaska. They report that the temperature has been in the upper 20s
with frost a couple of mornings lately. It will be interesting to get
their reports throughout the winter. This morning the low at Eagle,
Alaska was 33—the coldest in the USA. Leadville, Colorado had 34. I
will never forget that high altitude city, because we skidded off an
ice-covered street into a ravine one night and immediately about 7
guys surrounded our car and manually pushed us back up on the street.
We were en route to Rogers Pass, Montana, so we had a little early
excitement.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a new tropical wave just off the West
African coast, but showers have decreased. Any development will be
slow as it moves west 10-15. The NHC says the chance is low that it
will become a tropical cyclone in the next two days. Tropical Storm
Erika was moving west at 9 with sustained winds only 40 mph and still
headed toward the SE Bahamas by Sunday night or Monday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly was pooped when we
took her to the king size oasis last night, but she became restless
because she kept hearing grandchildren in the living area. She jumped
off the bed twice. Apparently she licked the carpet some and started
sneezing loudly. She may have had a little bit hung in her throat. On
the walking track, we saw a bumblebee sitting on the walk and another
bee hovering in midair about 4 feet above. Molly sniffed at the bee on
the track and it took off like a jet striking Molly on the side of her
face. The other bee hit my shoulder as it took off. That was quite a
bit of excitement for a little 9-pound puppy. We never know what to
expect and life goes on.
