...A Dry Beginning To The Weekend...

WARMER AFTERNOONS: Noticeably drier has moved into Alabama this
morning, and will set the stage for a rain-free Friday with a warmer
afternoon. With amply sunshine, we expect a high in the mid 80s this
afternoon for most Alabama communities. Humidity levels will be low
making for a comfortable early September day.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: Look for very similar weather tomorrow; partly to
mostly sunny with a high in the mid 80s. But on Sunday, moisture
levels will begin to increase, and we will introduce the chance of a
few widely scattered showers by afternoon. Showers will be more
widespread Monday and on into the middle part of next week as moist
air hangs over the state, and an upper trough develops nearby.
Afternoon highs will trend downward early next week due to clouds and
showers.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are forecasting another great night for high
school football tonight; the sky will be clear, with kickoff
temperatures in the upper 70s, dropping into the low 70s by the fourth
quarter. For the Auburn/Louisiana Tech game tomorrow evening (6:00
kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the sky will be mostly clear with a
kickoff temperature near 80 degrees, falling into the mid 70s by the
fourth quarter. We will promise no rain for the Alabama/Virginia Tech
game tomorrow night in Atlanta (8:00 kickoff on ABC 33/40) because the
game is indoors (the Georgia Dome), but the weather outside will be
clear with temperatures in the 70s. And, in Birmingham, UAB will host
Rice in the home opener at 3:00 tomorrow at Legion Field. The sky will
be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 84 degrees, falling to
near 80 by the end of the game.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND ON THE COAST: The sky will be generally cloudy on the
Alabama/Northwest Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow through Monday (less
than four hours of sunshine daily), with occasional showers and a few
thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be close to 80
degrees.

ERIKA: Now a tropical depression, Erika is fighting dry air, harsh
upper air winds, and interaction with the mountainous island of
Hispaniola. While it will most likely weaken into a tropical wave
today, there is some change it could organize again late in the
weekend. If that happens, most likely it will stay in the Atlantic,
perhaps sideswiping the upper part of the U.S. Atlantic Coast next
week. But again, there is a chance this one will dissipate soon.

EXTREMES: Hottest places in the nation yesterday were Blythe and
Needles, California with 109 degrees. Coldest place was Eagle, Alaska
with 30 degrees. West Yellowstone, Montana wasn't far behind with 33.
Warmest spot in Alabama was Mobile with 87. The high at the Shelby
County Airport in Calera was only 79.
