...Mostly Dry For The Weekend...

BENIGN WEATHER: A rather uneventful weather pattern is shaping up for
Alabama through at least the beginning of the Labor Day weekend. Drier
air will mean partly sunny days and mostly fair nights through
Saturday, with afternoon highs generally in the mid 80s. While we
can't completely rule out a pop-up shower somewhere in isolated spots,
the chance of any one spot getting wet is so small that we won't
mention it in our formal forecast.

Moisture will increase late in the weekend; we will introduce the
chance of a few isolated showers, followed by a better chance of rain
at times on Labor Day. The first half of next week looks wet at times
with the chance of showers on a daily basis.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks like excellent conditions for high school
football games across Alabama tonight and tomorrow night. The sky will
be mostly clear, with a kickoff temperature near 80 degrees, falling
into the 70s during the game. For Saturday night's Auburn-Louisiana
Tech game at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the sky will be mostly clear with a
kickoff temperature close to 80 (6:00 p.m.), with temperatures
dropping into the mid 70s by the second half. Needless to say, rain
won't be an issue for the Alabama-Virginia Tech game in Atlanta
Saturday night since the game is inside the Georgia Dome, but outside
we expect a clear sky and no significant chance of rain. UAB will host
Rice Saturday afternoon at Legion Field (3:00 kickoff); the sky will
be partly to mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 85 degrees,
falling to near 80 by the end of the game.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine along the Gulf
Coast (Panama City west to Gulf Shores) today through Saturday with
only widely scattered showers. Showers and storms will be more
numerous Sunday and Monday with only a limited amount of sunshine on
those days. Highs along the coast will be in the low 80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Erika is not doing very well this
morning; the system is a minimal tropical storm near the Leeward
Islands, moving slowly to the northwest. The combination of dry air
around the system, harsh winds aloft, and interaction with Hispaniola
could very well mean the system dissipates within the next 36 hours.
The official track from the National Hurricane Center shows
dissipation just south of the Bahamas Saturday. The rest of the
Atlantic basin is quiet for now.

And, in the East Pacific, Hurricane Jimena made landfall as a category
two hurricane yesterday on the Pacific coast of Baja California. The
main threat will be heavy rain and flooding as the system becomes
nearly stationary over the central part of the Baja peninsula.

The Gulf of Mexico remains rather inactive, and we see no sign of any
tropical mischief in the Gulf for the next 10 days. But, the water is
warm and something might blow up down there before the season is over.
We will be watching.
