...Moist Air Hangs Around...

EASTERLY FLOW CONTINUES: Not much change in the Alabama weather
situation today; a moist low level easterly flow will continue,
meaning the sky will be generally cloudy with the chance of some light
rain in scattered spots. While we are forecasting a high close to 80
today, some places won't get out of the 70s due to the clouds. It was
interesting to watch our SKYCAM yesterday at Alabama's highest
mountain, Mount Cheaha, which is about 20 miles south of Anniston. The
low level wind from the east kept Cheaha State Park in the clouds all
day, and the high temperature was an amazing 68 degrees, which is
exactly 20 degrees below the average high of 88. Even in Anniston,
down in the lower elevations, the high was only 72.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: We will have to keep a chance of widely scattered
showers in the forecast tomorrow with moist air hanging tough. By
Friday, the air should be a little drier, and for now we won't mention
showers in the formal forecast, although I would not be shocked to see
a few small blips on the radar Friday afternoon. Anything that forms
should be very isolated, and rain should not be a problem for high
school football games across Alabama Friday night. Temperatures will
trend upward slightly, with mid 80s by Friday.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: Saturday will be very similar to Friday; a shower
or two is possible, but it looks like the chance of any one spot
getting wet is so small that we didn't mention it in the forecast. We
will introduce a few periods rain in the forecast on Sunday and Monday
as moisture levels will be increasing again. Temperatures remain below
average.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn will host Louisiana Tech for their home
opener Saturday evening at 6:00 at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the sky will
be partly cloudy with only a very slight chance of a shower during the
game. The kickoff temperature will be close to 80, dropping into the
mid to upper 70s during the game. We will promise no rain for the
Alabama/Virginia Tech game Saturday night in Atlanta, simply because
the game is inside the Georgia Dome. Duh.

AT THE BEACH: Looking ahead to the holiday weekend, we expect about 3
to 5 hours of sunshine each day along the coast from Panama City west
to Gulf Shores, with the daily chance of a few scattered showers and
storms. Showers should be more numerous on Sunday and Monday. The sea
water temperature last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 83
degrees.

ERIKA FORMS: Tropical Storm Erika is northwest of the Leeward
Islands with sustained winds of 50 mph. The system is forecast to move
slowly to the northwest, and by early next week should be just east of
the Bahamas. Too early to determine the final destination of this one,
but often systems in that position recurve into the open Atlantic
before reaching the East Coast of the U.S. Strengthening should be
slow due to harsh upper air winds over the next 5 days.
