...The Pesky Ole Wedge...

VERY COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURES: Yes, the ole wedge is in effect. It is
not the most distinct case of a wedge we have ever seen, but it is
keeping a cloud cover intact and spreading it generally westward
across Alabama from South Carolina and Georgia.

It was only 69 in Atlanta at midday. Over in East Alabama it was 64
atop Mt. Cheaha with a brisk east wind. Visibility at noon on the
highest peak in Alabama was only a few feet.

With a wedge of this type, scattered showers will be developing at
times. We do not expect a widespread rain event. The showers are
usually fairly small. We cannot rule out an isolated thunderstorm,
especially tomorrow. We believe that Friday and Saturday will be dry.
The wedge is being caused by a high-pressure area almost stationary
from Michigan to New England with the ridge extending down through the
mid-Atlantic States. An old stalled front lies across the Northern
Gulf of Mexico, so all of Alabama was actually in a slightly cool
blanket of air. Our temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s almost
every night through the weekend and our highs in the low to mid 80s.
We do not see any 90-degree heat on the board at this time.

MARCH OF TIME: At the north edge of Alaska, there will be 15 hours
and 32 minutes of daylight today, but they are losing 10 minutes a day
as the old sun ball heads south. Actually, the sun is not moving
south. Instead, the earth is tilted on its axis like it has always
been doing since the beginning of time. In the Birmingham area, we
will be losing about 2 minutes of sunlight a day for the time being.
All of this, of course, is the first hint of the changing season as we
head into autumn. Today is the first day of autumn as far as weather
people are concerned.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The National Hurricane Center will dispatch a recon
into the disturbed weather area east of the Lesser Antilles this
afternoon. The center of circulation is not yet well defined, but NHC
believes it could become Tropical Storm Erika at almost any time
during the next day or so as it moves WNW at about 10 mph. Meanwhile,
a new kid is on the block (make that water). The tropical wave just
off the West African coast is showing signs of organization. If it
continues to do so, it could be named Fred.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: In Chicago, the old thermometer could not reach
70 for the last 5 days.
They have had a very cool summer. A huge contrast when you go down
into Central and South Texas. San Antonio had 24 days of 100-degree
plus heat in August and they have a 13-inch rain deficiency for the
year. Corpus Christi has received only 4 inches of rain all year—a
shortfall of 16 inches. Cold spots this morning included Chandalar
Lake, Alaska and Leota, Michigan with 30. Death Valley with 113 was
the hottest yesterday.

CALIFORNIA FIRE DISASTER: It is a horrible situation with the roaring
fires now threatening Mt. Wilson east of Las Angeles where there is an
observatory, dozens of radio and TV towers, even some police and fire
department transmitters.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When I took Little Miss Molly on her
afternoon walk yesterday, the timing could not have been better. About
2/3 around the track, we met Dino coming toward us. He was out on a
walk also. He turned around and the gentleman and I and the two little
dogs were walking side-by-side down the walk. Wish you could have seen
the dogs. They acted like they did not have a care in the world with
both tails wagging continuously and occasionally they would stop and
play awhile and then keep walking. Dino is only three years old. He is
one of the cutest little Yorkies imaginable and he and Little Miss
Molly are deeply in love. Life goes on.
