...A Little Scattered Light Rain?...

EASTERLY FLOW: While we really don't any serious rain around here for
the next week, it does look like we need to mention the chance of
scattered light rain across much of Alabama today and tomorrow as a
moist low level easterly flow sets up. This kind of pattern also hints
that temperatures will remain well below average through mid-week;
parts of East Alabama might have a hard time getting out of the 70s
today with cloudy periods and a few showers around. Everybody else
will likely reach the low 80s, but we should be in the upper 80s on
the first day of September (today's average high is 88 degrees).
Pretty much the same situation tomorrow; a few cloudy periods and a
chance of scattered light rain during the day.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: While an isolated shower could certainly
pop up along the way, this four day stretch looks relatively dry for
now with partly sunny days and highs in the low to mid 80s. We don't
figure rain will be a big problem for high school football games this
week, or college games here in Alabama on Saturday. We will have the
specific kickoff forecasts later this week.

TROPICS: The most interesting tropical cyclone on the board this
morning is Hurricane Jimena in the eastern Pacific, which is packing
sustained winds of 155 mph, just below category five strength. The
storm is expected to reach the southwest coast of the Baja peninsula
early tomorrow morning as a major hurricane. Then, the system will
weaken, but still is forecast to produce big time rains up through the
northern part of Baja, with potential for rain totals of over 20
inches through Friday.
In the Atlantic, a strong tropical wave is expected to become Tropical
Storm Erika during the next 36 hours. This one is east of the Leeward
Islands, and is forecast to move northwest, in a position north of
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Saturday. With weak steering
currents, it is too early to determine if this system will recurve
harmlessly into the open Atlantic, or be a threat to the East Coast of
the U.S. Best forecast now is for recurvature before reaching the
coast, much like Bill and Danny.
We also note disturbed weather in the northern Gulf of Mexico on the
old front that passed through Alabama Sunday night. While there is no
sign of organization, we always have to watch areas like this in early
September for potential development.

METEOROLOGICAL FALL: Those of us in the weather business consider
today as the first day of fall; autumn consists of September, October,
and November. Of course, in terms of astronomy, the season arrives a
bit later. The autumnal equinox this year will come at 4:18 p.m. CDT
on September 22, when the sun is directly over the equator on the
journey south. That is the day when we have approximately 12 hours of
daylight, and 12 hours of darkness. Our "shortest day" of the year
will come on the winter solstice, at 6:04 a.m. on December 21, right
before the jolly old man makes his rounds from the North Pole.
