...Last Day of Summer...
A SEASONAL TRANSITION: There are signs that the seasons are ready to
change in Alabama and across the entire USA fruited plain. Actually,
based on long-term records, the Birmingham temperature had its zenith
in mid-August when the average daily high dropped from 91 to 90. Today
it has dropped to 88 and will be at the 80-degree mark by the end of
September.
Tomorrow is the first day of autumn based on how the weather community
operates. Officially on the calendar, it does not arrive until
September 22, but we do not go by that.
THE NOW HAPPENING: We do not have a distinct handle on the current
weather forecast. We invite you to check our day-by-day on the 7-day
planner. Slightly cooler and drier air has pushed all the way to the
Gulf Coast. The trouble begins when a high-pressure system stalls over
the NE states and tries to send an easterly flow across Alabama. We
call this a wedge effect, although it is not very distinct at this
time. So our conclusion is that we will not get a great deal of rain
in Central Alabama. We could see a few Tuesday afternoon and on
Wednesday, but mostly dry for Thursday and Friday. The morning run of
the GFS model indicates some scattered light showers or rain over the
eastern part of the state tomorrow afternoon and over other parts of
the state Wednesday afternoon. We do not see any unusually high
temperatures all the way through the weekend with highs mostly in the
80s and on some nights it could drop to near 60.
ANNISTON: That East Alabama city (and a beautiful one in my opinion)
has been lucky in the rain department here in August. They received an
additional 1.35 inches yesterday bringing their total to 6.74 inches
for August with measurable rain on 12 days. Their 2009 total is just
under 41 inches—an excess of 3.65. Many locations in the state got
some rain on Sunday with close to 3 inches at Gardendale over 2 inches
at Clay/Pinson, Muscadine and over 1 inch at Mobile and Anniston.
Pinson received 1.67 inches.
DROUGHT AND WILDFIRES: The situation around Las Angeles is extremely
scary with no significant improvement in sight. A State of Emergency
for a number of counties. Down in South Texas, Corpus Christi had 101
again Sunday and their rain for the year still only 4.10 inches. Last
night a waterspout did move on shore into Galveston breaking the
windows out of a police car, unroofing a souvenir shop with
significant structural damage to at least two homes. Three persons
were injured by flying debris.
AROUND MY FAVORITE COUNTRY: Chicago had a real cool August. It was 41
in Aurora, Illinois this morning and 39 at Wanath in NW Indiana. The
USA cold champion was Leota, Michigan and Arctic Village, Alaska with
28. Death Valley had 119 Sunday.
IN THE TROPICS: Out in the Atlantic, there is a broad area of low
pressure 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles showing good signs of
organization. There is no well-defined circulation at the surface, but
there is a good chance (greater than 50%) of a tropical cyclone within
the next two days. Meanwhile, over in the East Pacific, powerful
Hurricane Jimena is headed straight for Baja, California. The center
was 545 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Highest sustained winds
are now 150 mph and extremely dangerous Category 4.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After going three or four days in a row
without playing ball with Molly, I have played with her for three days
in a row and sometimes more than one game. That little girl is smart
as a whip and she quickly became spoiled again to getting her game in.
So much so, that I would tippy-toe through the living area, desperate
for coffee. She would awaken from a sound sleep, grab a ball and throw
it at me. I am going to do a lot of studying to try to get my IQ up to
her level. Life goes on.
