...Goodbye August...

When I think of August 2009, I will think cool, and that will be
fairly close to the truth. The average high for the month will turn
out to be around 87.5F, which is nearly three degrees below the
"normal" high for the month, which is 90.2F The average low in the
month was 69.6F, which is just a shade above the "normal" high of
68.9F. So, we will finish the month just about 2 degrees below
average. Not surprising, given the persistent troughiness and
significant cool snap last week. On average, it reaches 90F or hotter
15 times. We did it 11 times in August 2009.

RAINY SUNDAY: Just over one half inch of rain at the Birmingham
Airport yesterday brought our monthly total to 4.47 inches. This is
about an inch above the average 3.48 inches in the eighth month in the
Magic City. Most folks saw rain over the weekend, but some areas
didn't. We are good in the drought monitor department, with only
parts of Cleburne, Randolph and Chambers Counties in the abnormally
dry category. The weekend's rains won't wipe out that shortfall, but
did help.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Low clouds and some fog should burn off fairly
quickly, leaving partly cloudy skies for today. It will be noticeably
less humid, with dewpoints in the upper 50s. Highs will top out in
the lower to middle 80s. Tuesday should be dry again. We could see
an upper low develop right over the state by midweek. This could lead
to clouds and a slight chance of showers from Wednesday through
Friday. Widely scattered storms will be around for the Labor Day
weekend, but things should be pretty nice all in all for the Labor day
holiday.

ERIKA: The Hurricane Center says it is pronounced ERR-ree-ka. We may
be learning to say it later this week when the disturbance in the
Atlantic about 700 miles east of the Lesser Antilles becomes a
tropical storm. Conditions are favorable for development, but so far
the system has not been able to get its act together. It should go
north of the islands and stay away from the U.S.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: Hurricane Elena stalled off the coast of West
Central Florida and held it a virtual hostage for the Labor Day
weekend. More than 300,000 residents fled their homes. Although
Elena never came closer than 80 miles to the Tampa Bay area, its 40 to
50 mph sustained winds caused tides six feet above normal on the
beaches and seven feet above normal in the bay. The storm killed four
people, destroyed more than 250 homes and damaged thousands of others
before reversing course on Sunday morning and coming ashore in
Mississippi early on Labor Day. Total damages to man-made property in
Florida were estimated at $213-million. Follow my weather history
